buzzing sound at throttle let-off
I'm not sure if this is engine or transmission related. I can hear an odd buzzing/rattling sound when I let off the throttle that wasn't there before. I'm not sure if it's the turbo spooling down or something in the tranny gone awry. It only lasts for a couple of seconds, but it's definitely audible to everyone in the car.
Any suggestions?

Let's try to isolate the noise.
If you rev the engine when the car's sitting still, does it make the noise then?
Does it make the noise only when the vehicle is in motion?
Does it make the noise when you push the clutch in?
Does it always make the noise at the same RPM range? the same gear, or any gear?

Ok, so I played with this problem quite a bit today. The facts:
It always seems to happen around 3250rpm, regardless of what gear it is in, and disappears about 500-750rpm down from there. I have honestly not heard it in fourth or fifth, but the noise would not be audible at that rpm in either gear, with wind and other noises. It does not happen all the time, for instance it will not happen the first few times you drop through that rpm range after pulling away from a stop. It does not happen in neutral, at least not as far as I have seen. It definitely sounds like something spinning down, but I don't know whether it's engine or tranny related. If anyone wants any more info for their diagnosis, I'll be happy to go test. Thanks for all help.

What exhaust/heatshield/hanger mods do you have?
I had a wicked rattle when I would let off which was my downpipe barely buzzing against the frame.

Car has no mods whatsoever. It's a 2004 with about 2100 miles on it. I actually found a thread that talked about something sort of like this, but there was never any resolution. He described the sound as a "whirring", which is probably more accurate.

I think my car does this too. Has me kind of worried and I have no clue what it is. Well I guess this is a useless post. My noise is coming from the engine area, I don't think it's the tranny. I feel like it's coming from the turbo...

Ok, I know this is an ancient thread, but...
I have established that it does indeed happen in neutral, only for some reason it won't happen just after starting the car when parked. After some driving, it'll do it, and in neutral with the rpms dropping while moving, it'll do it. This is proof enough to me that it's not tranny/awd related, so I think I'm going to take it to the dealer. Any further words of wisdom given this information? What would make this noise from an engine/turbo standpoint?
