Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Anyone running 18g-xt on the 2.0?

I have this turbo in my garage. 18g-xt 7cm. Just wondering if any guys have tried it on the 2.0 and what their thoughts are on spool and power? Ive seen alot of graphs from the 2.5l guys but only 1 from a 2.0. My goal was to get to 300whp on 91octane, hoping this list of supporting parts will get me there.

txs tmic
dw 650's
sti up
stock airbox/ w k&n drop in
catted downpipe
ebcs
walbro 255
gms inlet

Seems like that should put me close to what im looking for. Any thoughts from guys running this turbo?

well

you can def get there on a vf39 i know some dudes will disagree but it has happened and i have seen it.... your mods seem fine maybe bigger injectors but 300hp on a 2.0 is a monster.... I am going to ( dont recommend this BUT ) install a fp green and i have a whole **** ton of parts to put on to get me to 320 hp. I hope my tranny doesnt disagree with me but then again ill just get another lol but the short answer YES you can obtain 300 on that set up and always ask your tuner.... i say it again ask your tuner but he should be conservative and get you there while reducing the possibility of a problem...... although every time you go over 250 hp on a 2.0 you are elevating the risk of something going wrong.. so keep that in your mind and keep a lil in your bank and should go well.....lemme know when you tune that bad boy and just be prepared for HAULING *** Lol

Just wanted to post an update. I ended up installing this mod list...

18gxt / 7cm
grimmspeed turbo inlet
txs tmic
tgv deletes
dw 850 injectors
cnt catted downpipe
perrin ebcs
walbro 255
Sti upipe

Brought the car to Mike for some tuning. Made 259/221 on the dyno at GST which reads a stock 2.0 wrx at 155awhp. My fmic fpgreen lgt only hit 305 in comparison on his dyno. Hot dynoroom with hot intake temps (dyno done with hoodclosed), poor 91 cali gas, and low reading dyno = some pretty low numbers. I try not to look at the numbers and just judge the feel of the car. Night and day difference between stock setup and the boost comes in sooner then I thought it would on a 2.0 3800-3900. First few gears feel great. Feels like a different car completely. The topend lacks in the higher gears compared to my 2.5 but that was sorted expected with the smaller engine. I'll post up the dyno sheet if anyone is interested in seeing it. The big bottleneck is the 91cal fuel. The turbo has plenty of room to go, but without the octane it wont get there. Wish I could squeeze some power out of it, but without going meth or a higher octane I'm stuck it seems for now. This is my daily driver/family wagon so need to keep it on the 91. Mikes tuned a couple of my cars and is always great to deal with. I was really worried about lag on the 2.0 with the 18gxt but the car drives great and feels good. I'm sure alot of that has to do with tune.

Not to be rude but that's very low hp on that turbo on a any dyno I had a 2.0 on an 18g and made 330whp on Eds dyno that reads low just like mikes. What's your boost?

Hey no worries, I know the numbers are very low. Its consistent with my last car which was very low also on his dyno, so that plus the high temps makes me believe its just a low reading dyno. Car feels better then numbers reflect. Not sure what boost is at. Dynosheet didnt list it and the car doesnt have a boost gauge. On 91 I would guess 20 max same as my previous setups. There wasnt any problems on the dyno other then the high temps, I was told. 330 on mikes dyno on 91cal from an 18g would be unheard of. I dont have any experience on Ed's. Ill post up the dyno tonight, the curve looks solid just numbers on the low side.

Well this discussion will have to be put on hold.... I believe the turbo or something in the engine just blew.

I had the car in neutral going downhill completely off the throttle and then the car died. I pull over and try to restart it and nothing, almost sounded like a starter thats jammed or something. Popped the hood to observe and everything looks good under there. Tried to get it to fire up once more and got it to turn over but sounded pretty horrible and clanky, but no smoke out the exhaust. Plugged in the accessport and no engine codes. I look through some the the live data and the temps seem fine. I guess I will start pulling parts back off.........

Pulled the turbo & downpipe tonight. Its still in perfect condition, no play or signs of damage. Drained the oil pan & pulled the oil filter, no metal shavings down there.... The mystery continues on...

Looks like part of a piston may have failed and broke off. The leak down test came back with 20% loss from cylinder 3. Eqtuning is pulling the block and will be putting in a new shortblock for a hybrid setup. Major bummer that the 2.0 didnt last longer...

What was the mileage on the failed motor? Kinda weird how it failed at idle speed instead of a wot run.
