When that Short Shifter won't pop in...
Just finished my Short Shifter install... I had the hardest time getting the new one to get back into that plastic housing. Tried hammering it down, pushing it down – no success…
After that, I used the following approach: (1) Got the shifter bushing out (2) Found my long (10-12 inch) wrench extension (3) Used that extension to press the shifter in, sticking it under the metal shifter plate (the one that holds the rubber in place) and through the shifter. It went in right away with not too much force applied. I didn’t see any damage to the plate or to the rubber underneath, so everything seems ok…
Then proceed on with putting the stock bushings back in, flipped the metal plate 180 to prevent contact, connected the shifter to the linkage, etc, etc… Basically, everything else was per scoobymods tutorial…
Hope my description was not too confusing… sorry, no pix for now, maybe I’ll take some later if I try to adjust it…

Hair dryer to the cup on the car for about 10 min. and freeze the shifter overnight. Assuming you have plenty of grease on it also. Then take a short 2x4 set it on top of the shifter and the wack it into place with a deadblow hammer. This is what I did and it works like a charm.

I had the same problem. I was pounding the short shifter with a rubber mallet as hard as i could. I almost took out the rear view mirror with one of my swings on accident. Finally, on about the 30th blow, it went in. This was on a 100 degree day too.

HAHA.. I thought it was just me that had this problem. I almost took out my rearview mirror as well. I don't feel so bad now. Eventually I got so mad I just bashed it in with the wood and a hammer. Anyone doing this, A RUBBER MALLET will probably make your life SOOOO much easier.. or another person to hold the shifter while you are hammering it.

Here's what I did, worked in about two whacks, took 60 seconds:
1. Cut a piece of a 2x4 into a block about 2-4 inches long.
2. Drill a hole with a diameter a little bigger than the shift lever halfway through the wooden "block".
3. Put the block over the lever.
4. Hammer.

I'm sure that it would have been easier with a plastic hammer or even a metal hammer, but i was afraid of damaging the threads on top of the shifter. Turns out that the **** i'm using doesn't even utilize the threads, so i guess that was a waste.
