viscous coupler update
Hey prodriven (sorry had to make new thread, couldn't reply to our previous one)
Thanks for the info... I'm not sure how long this bad diff can be driven on, it seems all that jumping around that happens can't be good for the bearings and stuff, but the mechanic i talked to said it doesn't hurt anything and isn't a safety problem (especially because it only seems to happen at low speeds on very sharp angles)... My mechanic wasn't really sure which coupler was binding; he had a strong suspicion that it's the center diff which apparently resides in the rear of the transmission.. It sounds like this is what your mechanic has also concluded... So at least i know that if i do get the trans worked on, it will more than likely solve my problem. I think i might have the work done becuase i would hate to have something break competely while i'm out somewhere in the woods.
I am also trying to get Subaru to warranty this work.. My noise started to happen at around 65K.. This is only 5K over the drivetrain warranty... kinda lame...
Also, it seems this problem (broken coupler) can happen if the car is put on a 2-wheel dynamo during some state's inspection process (e.g. PA).. So make sure that didn't happen to your's... I think most garages see a subaru and know they can't use a subaru, but it's worth investigating.. I think you can tell by reading the inspection report if they used the dynamo or not (if they did, you might get the shop that screwed up to pay for your work)....
Ok, let me know if you find out anything else...
regards,
nick.

Not sure why mine went bad. My car defintely never went on a 2wd dyno. We can watch the E-check being done here in Ohio and I always make sure to tell them not to put it on the rollers.
What kind of estimate did you get froim the dealer? How amny hours?
With only 65k I would call Subaru. Talk to a rep at SOA about getting the warranty work done, don't talk to a dealer about getting it warrantied. SOA replaced my wheel bearing when it was officially out of warranty (although it was the 6th one and they deemed it a constant problem) and agreed to fix it. I was stuck in Hilton Head with no dealer within 120 miles and they warrantied the parts being replaced at an independnt repair shop since there was no dealer near. Good luck getting it warrantied.

Hey,
So, my 2000 Outback MT is in the shop getting it's center viscous coupler replaced. SOA states it should take 4.1 hours. The shop estimates 12 hours.. I think that's a bit extreme.. We'll see what they actually come up with. Problems started around 65K so i'm waiting for word from SOA to see if they will warranty..
Any comments would be greatly appreciated...
