Viscous coupler question
Viscous coupler question
I have a 02 wagon with 06 stock rims could this be why my vc went out on me or was it normal wear. I was reading if you have different rims it could cook the vc fliud ? ??

The tires need to be the same general circumference.
Factors such as improper and neglected tire pressures, bad alignment, etc which lead to uneven tire wear and eventually uneven tires will lead to the viscous coupling center differential frying itself resulting in torque bind.
Basically, attention to:
* tire wear/alignment
* tire pressures
* tire rotations
will keep your center differential fine if properly maintained.
Also, changing only any less than 4 tires is just asking to fry the center diff.

So let's say for example, you get a sidewall puncture on one tire.
If one were to cheap out and replace only one tire, you would have uneven tire circumferences. That is a no-go for AWD vehicles, and would eventually result in the viscous coupler frying itself and end up with torque bind.
So if one tire goes bad, all tires need to be replaced to maintain proper circumference of all the tires.

There are a few places in the Bay that will shave a new tire down to match existing tires. This can be a lot cheaper than buying 4 new tires. Custom Alignment in Mountain View is where I used to go for shaving.
