Transmission leak!
Transmission leak!

I took my RS in for the clutch TSB Wednesday, and I told them my halfshafts were leaking. They claimed they were just covered in road grime. I made them clean them off, so that next month when one side is way dirtier than the other they won't get to argue with me.

I think I answered this question before on the other site about the seal that is on the transmission. There is a plate where the half shafts attach that can be unscrewed. There is a small fork shaped piece held on with one bolt that keeps the plate from turning once its on. Behind that plate is a seal that occasionally will leak and need to be replaced. Keep in mind that the plate is to be screwed back in the exact same amount so keep track of how far to screw it back on by marking the housing and the plate with an arrow and then counting how many rotations it made to come off the car and line the arrows up again when done. Search the other site for it. If need be let me know and I'll load the pics up again of what I am talking about.
i see, thanks for the info. is this covered under warranty? and i would definetly like the directions to do it myself w/some pics. it doesnt look like a major problem but i would still like to take care of it. i first noticed it once i put on new front tires. they are still stock 205/55/16 but a different brand (dunlop) and i know awd systems require the same size tires or the diffs will go crazy. well thanks for the info again i appreciate it.

I had the pics on imagestation but for some damn reason they pulled the pics claiming it was offensive. So apparently the Subaru drivetrain is offensive to somebody out there. Go figure. Do a search for it on the other site cause I think the guy I orignally gave the pics to still has some and could explain it more.

My front driver's side half shaft was replaced under warranty because it was leaking at the point where it met the transmission. Evidently this is very common on early build USDM WRX's and the design has been changed.
The funny thing is, I had not even noticed it. I dropped the ride off before going on vacation for clutch shudder. When I got back, I picked up the car with a new clutch, flywheel etc. and the service manager said, "we ordered you a new half shaft, we'll call you when it comes in and it will only take a couple hours to replace it under warranty.".
I'd think twice about buying another Subaru if it weren't for Bruce in Santa Cruz.

only on the older model us wrx's? huh, i got mine right when they hit us grounds.. maybe that explains the leak. i also found out that my input shaft bearing is shot, im gonna take i back to the dealer next week and have them fix all this crap thats broken. my clutch slips but it engages towards the bottom instead of the top where normal clutch slippage occurs. i gotta get this looked at before i go over the warranty point... thanks a lot tho.
