short shifter

sorry if i'm in the wrong forum, i'm not sure. it's just a general questions about shifters. I want to know, what's the difference between after short shifters, like a kartboy short shifter, or the oem short THROW shifter. i noticed that the aftermarket ones is just the shifting rod, but the oem short throw shifter is like a whole lotta stuff. thanks for the help, and mod's please move it to correct forum [transmission] if this is in the wrong forum.

I was under the impression that when people say short shifter, or short throw shifter, they were the same thing. All it does is decrease the amount of travel the shifter has to move to shift into gear, so it provides faster and probably easier shifts.

i just installed kartboy

The mechanical advantage comes from the length of the shifter blow the the attachment point. It's about 1/2" longer from the ball to the knuckel. There is a noticalbe decrease in the throw. In addition to the shifter I installed the new bushings. This tightened up the linkage considerable and gave it a nice crisp feeling. I don't know much about the facory contraption, looks like alot of stuff to install.

I don't like the idea of the Perrin SS. The stock shifter has the rubber interior to cut down on vibration, but this also causes some sloppiness in the shifts. I have one of the dual adjustable SS that allows me to adjust the length of the throw and the height of the shift ****. Got it from Passen Motorsports for 80.

i think the stock shifter is a rod with rubber around it (dampening vibrations) with a sleeve covering that. so with that in mind how can that cause more sloppiness? if is sloppy then that means the cylinder is bending (looking at it as a cylinder/tube) and i've never experienced a shifter that undergoes elastic deformation enough to be noticable. but i've heard of plastic deformation and the shifter bending but that is stupidity of the driver.

or are you talking about the torsional rigity of the shifter. i'd say your shift *** would rotate before the shift would turn

or lastly are you talking about the overall feel of the stock being sloppy and vibrate. if so then change the shifter bushings and no more.

but if there are any sloppiness in the shifter there is probably more coming for the urethane bushing and bolt that connects it to the shift linkage.

but then i'm just rambling on and talking out of the air so i might be competely wrong since i'm way far from being an expert.

Actually, I believe that the stock shifter does create a sloppier throw. When I installed my dual adjustable SS, I first set it to the stock height to try it oout because I had heard of the rubber interior of the stock lever. It made a huge difference in the accuracy of the shifts to not have that rubber interior. With the stock lever I always had problems fining 5th gear due to the sloppiness of the shifter. With the new SS, no problems. I can find any gear with ease. I would even feel the need to change out the bushings for a stiffer shift.

I am going to try a little experiment with the stock lever when I get home to see how much th stick actually moves within the housing. Maybe it's just me going crazy, but I swear that thing moves.
