Rislone in Tranny Experiment
Hi,
Just thought I'd pass some experience on. I've got a '91 Subaru Legacy 4wd manual and for probably the last 10 years the shifter would grind going from 5th to 4th or anytime trying to go into 1st except when fully stopped.
I was talking to the engine/transmission builder I bought my rebuilt from and described the shifting problem. He said he uses about 1/2 quart of Rislone Engine Treatment in the older transmissions to clean off any coking on the syncros. He told me most syncros don't get ground up but just get grime on them where they won't grab properly. Since this car is my beater I thought I'd give it a try. In about 200 miles the transmission completely stopped grinding, even going into first coming up to a light. I know it's not just me since my girlfriend noticed it too.
It's been several thousand miles and I thought I'd just see if there were any shavings stuck to the drain magnet but it came out looking clean as usual. There's new oil in it with 1/2 quart of Rislone again. If the transmission craters I'll be sure to let everyone know but if anyone else tries this please let me/the group know what your experience is.
Thanks,
Mike

that's good to know.
i've had good success using a witch's brew of mobil 1 and pennzoil syncromesh, which was designed to provide a little extra friction for the syncros. the rislone may be doing the same for you.
if the mechanism is just getting "gummed up" you might try running without the rislone for your next change... if it's true it should still shift smoothly.
