Unhappy Reverse/First Gear Issues in 2005 RS

Hi All,

I have recently purchased a 2005 2.5RS it is now less than 6 months old and has developed a problem with the car not allowing me to shift into reverse. This issue is not happening all the time, but seems to be getting more frequent in occurance. I have been to the dealer twice now and have been told basically that this is normal functioning for these types of transmissions and their solution is for me to shift into first then back into reverse. Just wondering if anyone has any insite into this issue, or if others are having the same trouble.

Thanks...

Yeah,

I have similar tranny issues, although not as pronounced as yours. I do believe it is typical of our trannys to be on the fineky side of things. Something that may help, if you haven't installed already, are kartboy front and rear shifter bushings. I noticed after installing that my shifter moves much cleaner. Something also to consider is a hardened sti tranny mount, but I believe you may have to install hardened engine mounts in conjunction. (Obviously when the tranny shifts under everyday or spirited driving things move around so shifting will be rougher.) While this wont solve the problem, it will help some. Those tranny clunks scare the bajebus out of me too, but having done some looking through the forums, it seems to be a common issue.

there is no synchor in reverse so you'll have that problem. try going into first then reverse, or netural, rev, reverse. good luck!

I have no such problem with my MY02 WRX shifting into 1st or reverse. When the vehicle is stopped with the engine running, do you ever get a grinding when trying to engage any gear? If so, the clutch may not be completely disengaging.

Yes. leaving the clutch in and in gear allows the transmission to move to a more easy-slidey position.

As for first, try doing it slowly. It's easier on the synchros.

So you would like to know the TRICK for easy shifting into reverse?

#1 The reverse gear set use’s 1st – 2nd gear hub slider & 2nd gear to slow down & stop the main shaft & Driven shafts from rotating when shifting into Rev.

#2 Reverse gear doses have a synchro.

#3 The best tip for getting into Reverse without any trouble is to shift the transmission into 2nd gear, Then shift into reverse. This is all done whit the clutch pedal pushed all the way down.

#4 Use my cocktail blend of gear lube.

For a WRX – RS 2.5 MT-5 AWD 3.7 QU.
Of Penziol synthetic With 3 oz of the GM LSD additive!

Thanks
