no one should be "banging gears" with any gearbox

Upshifting
Upshifting should be done smoothly. Speedshifting will shorten the gearbox life. The only time I force an upshift is in a side by side race to the next corner, for position. I will sometimes “bang a gear” in an effort to take or hold a position. Listen to the in-car shifts of professional racers on TV, and they rarely bang shifts. Upshifts are done quickly and smoothly, but are not forced. If you want your gearbox to have a long, happy life, feel the gears, the changes should fall in, without being forced.
However, if he were trying to get an 11 second WRX, then yeah, I'd go PPG, otherwise RA's will suit him well. The ability to choose the ratios of the PPG is probably more intense than most be require/can handle/can understand. RA's are already proven (and fun to drive) gear ratios

I bang gears daily!

The STi can take the abuse.....I've read a few rumors that the transmission/gears are designed to withstand up to 1000whp....and in the off chance something does break, it will be an axle which is an easy fix. Plus, when people break something in the STi its from 2 things:

1) Ultra hard launches on the super grippy RE070 tires (broken axle)

2) Blatant abuse like launching in reverse or doing donuts for 5 minutes straight on the tarmac (toast a differential)

Ive been on the forums since 2004 and havent heard of a case of a broken gear in the STi (besides the reverse clutch drop ), only b0rked axles and toasted diffs.

thanks for all the info. ive decided just to do the treated RA grears because i will only be hitting the track about 3-4 times a year and im only running Max Power: 273.7 @ 6000 RPM and Max Torque: 276.3 @ 3750 RPM so i guess there is no need for right now to spend more than i need to.

one more question; does the RA gear set have same ratios as stock? if not should i retune?

It has shorter gearing. Retune not necessary.

You gotta give me a ride in this thing Jason.

320whp and 315wtq tuned by Ed @EQtuning. A week before my 2nd gear blew I went to infineon and was running consistent 12.8-13.0 @108-109mph but I had some issues with my car. I have misfire cel which Ed thinks is a grounding issue.
