Exclamation Is my trany going out or my clutch???

I just bought a 02 wrx for my brother and dont know if the clutch is going out or the tranny, this is what it does.
All gears are fine only when you down shift in 2nd and 1st it makes a grinding noise in the trany (like the brakes are going out) then when you put it in reverse it makes the same noise as youre rolling, push the clutch in as the car rools free the noise is the same till the car stops rolling or take it out of gear.
Can this be the clutch throw out braring etc, grars going bad...???
How can I check it before going to the shop with it???

Any info will help.
Thanks

you might want to try changing the transmission fluid. my friend bought his integra and it was doing some of the same things that your car is doing. we changed the fluid and it shifts fine now.

oh and word of advise, downshifting into first will be very difficult in wrx without rev matching. my bugeye had to basically go to a complete stop before i could shift into first.

hold on, so when you shift into reverse is the car rolling back? if so, thats WHY its grinding. wait for it to come to a complete stop before you go into reverse. if you are rolling back and trying to shift into reverse, it will almost always grind.

When I say grind, it sounds like the brakes going out (that kind of noise) but it is comming from the trany, and yes from a complete stop put it in gear start rolling noise starts.
As the car rolls I let it in gear with the clutch presed down and it still makes the same noise till I take it out of gear

Any other info???

synchros

Manual transmissions in modern passenger cars use synchronizers to eliminate the need for double-clutching. A synchro's purpose is to allow the collar and the gear to make frictional contact before the dog teeth make contact. This lets the collar and the gear synchronize their speeds before the teeth need to engage

Taken from howstuffworks.com

basically little gears inside the transmission that 'synch' RPMs when you're shifting gears. look at the inside of a tranny and you'll see them, cute little guys can't miss 'em.
