How much tranny fluid?

I just changed my tranny fluid on my 02 wrx. Drained it and filled it with about 3.8qts. Everything runs fine however, the dip stick reads really high. When I drained it It looked as though at least 3.5 - 3.8qts came out. So I'm a little confused. Is there a proper way to read the dip stick? It's a manual 5spd.

I read 3.8

After I totally drained the trany, I put about 3.5 - 3.8 quarts in. When I read the dip stick the oil line is about half and inch to 3/4 of an inch abobe the "F" hole (full marker).

When measuring do you plug the dipstick all the way back in the hole or are you not suposed to go that far...I'm confused.
