how to change your tranny fluid

I know this is sorta dumb, but how do you go about changing the tranny fluid. I had to add to the front differential today cause it was low but just dropped it into the filler tube. thanks all

are you mistakening the transmission with the rear diff?

(correct me if i'm wrong) the front diff is inside (part of) your transmission. there is also the center diff but you don't need to ever change that.

the front transmission is filled through the filler tube on the right side of the car (yellow pull dip stick). the rear diff is fill through the bolt.

Yes, the front diff and gearbox are one and the same when it comes to fluid. The dipstick tube is where you add oil to the transmission, the drain plug is underneath in the center.

I believe its 3.8 quarts for the WRX... but check the capacities page in your owners manual

Basically, get the tranmission to normal operating temperature, take out the transmission dipstick and jack the car up a little. Its just like changing engine oil. Put a pan under, undo the plug on the bottom of the transmission case and let it drain. One important part is WHILE ITS STILL DRAINING, as soon as possible, lower the car back down as much as you can. This way any sludge or shavings are more prone to drain out with the oil than to fall towards the back of the transmission case. (Some might find this to be a bit overkill ).

The new gear oil goes down the hole where the dipstick goes. I prefer to use a thin, long funnel with the cheaper/bulk gallon containers of gear oil. This is as opposed to those needle-nose bottles ... which some companies don't make anyway. At any rate, the dipstick hole isn't in the most accessible spot, so get a funnel. You might have to cut it to get a good fit. Be sure not to jam it in too hard, you don't wanna hurt the dipstick tube.

Oh let the metaphores roll on.

I just changed my tranny fluid on my 02 wrx. Drained it and filled it with about 3.8qts. Everything runs fine however, the dip stick reads really high. When I drained it It looked as though at least 3.5 - 3.8qts came out. So I'm a little confused. Is there a proper way to read the dip stick?

there is tons a pockets inside of the trans...... so all the fluid is not going to drain. so i would just drain it..... the slowly pour a quart at a time..... it probably less than 3.8 quart...... <that is the amount when the trans is dry. well just look on the full-low side of the dip stick(the two dots) as long its not above that top dot. you going to have look at it VERY CLOSELY since the fluid is really transparent.
