Arrow Cryo treating gears.

I am going to be upgrading my tranny as soon as it craps on me. Probably going with the sti RA gearset. Can I perform cryogenics on them like you would on a crank for more strength? Also I am about 35-40 min south of Sac, Ca. Do any of you know of a place close that can perform this process?

Thanks you for any help.

If you get these gears from Rallispec or one of their Vendors, they come pre-cryo'd.

Does the cryo process make the gears brittle? I've heard it does.
Where'd you hear this?

cyro treating does the complete opposite of making the gears brittle, it homologanates the metals cystalline structure, making it stronger, but also more durable.

What does cryo treatment do for the gears?
Cryogenic treatment helps to increase the surface hardness and changes the grain structure of the steel to reduce stress concentrations. It has been shown also that cryo treatment can help reduce sliding friction and wear of the gear teeth. These all add up to improved reliability and power capacity when compared to untreated gears. The only down side to cryo treatment is that it does increase the brittleness of the gears to some degree which reduces their ability to handle severe shockloads and sudden load reversals. For certain customers it may be advantageous to specify a non-cryo'd gearset when ordering. Those customers using very agressive clutch discs without sprung hubs may want to specify a non-cryo'd gearset.

this is what rallispec has on thier web site

i havent seen any increase in brittleness at work from cryo treating if not less brittleness the only place it doesnt do well is the wallet
cryo treating even works on non metals
