Interesting.
My car is in for thumping ront wheel problmes (maybe CV boot) ABS issues, a gas smell issue and I mentioned the clutch shudder at the bottom of my note to the dealer. Lets see what they do and say.
I do nto have horriable cluthc shudder issues but I do get them every now and then. I jsut want to get done what I deserve. IF they put something out that is faulty then they should fix it no matter how many miles we have. But if that is not what happens (which it is not) then I may as well try to get them to do it now prior to my 36K miles

UNBELIEVABLE DIFFERENCE
I just had my clutch replaced.
Took it to the dealer, sat on a hill, pulled 3000 rpm and nice loud squeal, the machanic said - "it's the flywheel, needs replacing, had a few of these in already"
MY03 Impreza 2.5 RS, 16000km's had service at 12500.
Anyway, 5-6 weeks later, the parts arrive. Off to the garage in the morning should be ready by 5pm evening time. I get a call in the afternoon about 3 and they say that "The mechanic thought the pressure plate looks a bit bad" - whatever that means. Anyway, its finally ready after being in the shop 2 whole days. like 16 hours of labour!
I got it back and immediately as I press the clutch - urm, it's a bloody honda clutch replacement for a woman / old person "it's too light" I tell the mechanic. He says it should settle down in 2-3 days.
Now here is the part that I CANNOT UNDERSTAND.....
It feels like a completely different car. Let me explain. I was driving today and all I can liken it to is that it seems to be about 200kg lighter. It revs freely. and I'm not talking about stationary I'm going on about in first / second. I put my foot down in second and it just revs like a japanese high revving car, not what I'de become used to at all. There is also no lag in pressing foot and revs climbing, not that there was before, but now it seems so effortless torque all the time. I really could not want much more from a car (sucker for 1litre suzuki). This also translates into being MUCH quicker. It's astonishingly different to drive. Can anyone explain this. Obviously revving much more freely means accelerating quicker. Redline is at the same 6500rpm but instead of 48 clicks I'm doing 58-60kph (hard to tell as it gets there so damn quick and more important to look at the road). And second instead of only doing 85kph it is just under the ton.
3rd and 4th pull harder and revs climb quicker again. 5th is yet to be discovered need to get over the legal speed limit to do this.
I imagine when I get tired of playing with this 'new toy' the fuel economy will be greatly improved as well.
If I had to put a finger on it, I'd say about a 20-30% improvement in power and the nice revving style is great. Was the old clutch / flywheel really losing 20-30 % of my power?
And anyone that is driving a car with the original clutch etc. - like mine had - well, they are being so conned with a bad performing car? Maybe mine was a turkey and they secretly fixed it. Maybe they changed something on the ECU?
Parts Fitted - which I so don't believe because it's sooooo different:
DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL MOD
LABOUR 0
2172560 12345aa001 1 DUAL MASS FLYWH 718.89
2172560 30100AA671 1 NO NOISE D/MASS 134.53
2172592 30210AA400 1 CLUTCH PRESSURE 105.00
958.42
of course, no charge, covered under warranty.
Thanks Scuderia Veloce Motors of Lindfield Sydney
OOH and btw, the noise has gone and the clutch is great to use, no shudder, pull away in second down hill no problem etc... reverse is still a real f*&@er though

well, the dealer told me they would find any reason to deny my claim. I called SOA, they told me the same thing. My car now has 60100 miles and its now out of warranty, thanks subaru.
I'll do the work myself and do a better job.

yes, they had my car, and basicly they were getting ready to tear into the transmission and I couldnt afford to be wrong. Its now 100 miles out of warranty and I stopped caring. Subaru will never get another dime from me

I am off to do battle tommorrow armed with my freshly printed TSB report thanks to this thread and the members who contributed to it.
I have been talked into returning to my point of purchase dealership , Marin Subaru in San Rafael after having been given the thumbs up on them and getting the big thunmbs down for my local dealer , Prestige Imports in santa rosa.
I feel much more confident with this piece of paper in hand.
Thanks folks!

I heard from Mark at Santa Cruz Subaru that if you have a modded uppipe/downpipe they will not be able to legally reassemble your car after installing the replacement clutch kit. Anybody found a way around this...?
(don't really want to get them to put my OEM pipes back...)

I just got my clutch and fly wheel change yesterday. I made an appointment, dropped it off the night before and it was ready to pick up at 2pm the next day. I have never had service like this from any car dealership. No questions asked!!!! and my car if far from stock.
People think im crazy but im sure some one understands here-- my new clutch is better than having sex. I can shift with my finger tips-- the whole tranny feels brand new. Oh and that stupid chudder is gone!!
