Clutch change Worth?
I blew the clutch on my 99 impreza rs (2.2L)
No mods yet.
I was charged 900$ (canadian) to get the F'n thing changed! My Toyota 4wd only costs in the range of 350 to 400$.. I was not impressed with the service. It was not done at a dealership, but at a lousy garage.
How much does a Clutch change usually cost on a Subaru?

What was the mileage of your RS? Was the clutch slipping at all? I am at the 90k km mark, no mods, and the clutch occasionaly slips. Have heard that when the weather gets warmer, wont be as bad. Did you replace clutch with Subaru parts, or go with aftermarket(Bully, Exedy, ACT)

Dang I'm getting worried now. I was planning on spending around $400 on a clutch once I got the ol tax refund back but now I am worried. Since you can get a clutch pretty cheap why is the cost so high, considering labor is 60 an hour at an expensive place?

the shop i work at charges around $300 for the whole clutch pack. but if your flywheels needs to be turned (which IMO should be every time the clutch is replaced) its little more. labor runs about 4-5 hours, i think. it actually takes about 2 hours, but you gotta charge by the book. and then add in a couple cans of shop solvent, a throw out bearing if not included in the kit. this is not a subaru dealer i work at, but all genuine subaru parts. we only charge $44/hour, where as one dealer gets $60 for people who bought their car there, and $75 for those who didn't. don't ask me how they get away with that one.

Clutches are not warranteed unless something is broke. Clutches are like brake bads they wear out. The only way a dealership will fix your clutch is if it has a manufacturers defect. I just paid $549 for an ACT clutch for my 03 WRX. The factory clutch is in excess of $900.

The clutch cost depends on where you take it and what parts they use for the replacement. Locally, the Subaru dealerships around here charge around $900 US for a clutch replacement and flywheel resurfacing... which is too much in my opinion. Of course they are dealerships, so bending you over is there game.
A local clutch specialty shop charges about ~$650 US (I can't remember exactly) for the same work, and they use OE Subaru parts for the replacement. I would say you didn't do too bad. For myself, I chose to purchase an upgraded exedy clutch, and have it put in at a specialty shop for the same price a dealership would have charged for the whole replacement.
