every now and then when i push the clutch all the way down and throw the car into first it makes a slight grinding noise (same noise it makes when you try to shift without pushing in the clutch) it only does it when im shifting from neutral to first quickly (kinda rough) but if i do it gently every thing is fine. car runs fine through all 5 gears its just going from neutral to first thats ikinda wierd.

I don't know why it does that, but i guess the first gear is very sensitive. I could be wrong, and you might have a problem, but as far as for me, it never makes that sound, it's when i shift too fast into first it has a hard time going in sometimes. and i gotta repress the clutch and try again.

02-03 you can not shift into first when you are moving or rolling. at least if you are over 5mph. i know folks with bugeyes that cant get in when moving at all. that is just one of the things that comes with having your year car. there is a syncro difference though i am not able to tell you exactly what this is. try the search problem and you will find other threads that people are talking about your exact same issue
its not like the other years such as 06-07 when you can put it into first at 35 mph with the clutch in.
how long have you had your car that you are just now relizing this issue.

been having the same problem as well in my 02. Just made a gear oil change (redline 75w90) got rid of the sludge...
now with fresh oil it seems to be meshing nice and smooth, no more grinding on a quick through into first at an intersection.

It's called wear & tear.
And why would you shift into 1st if not at a complete stop?
In following years, the 1st gear synchro was updated from a dual synchro to a triple synchro.
