02 Clutch

What's the average mileage a clutch will last on a 2002 WRX?
My girl is having some problems with 1st gear and the clutch seems a little twitchy once in a while. I read some of the other threads regarding the 1st gear issue (having to come to a complete stop to shift into 1st), sound like I'm not the only one having the issue. Her car has about 107K and I think it's the original clutch.
THanks

I dont think this is a clutch issue....I think you're talking about the 1st gear syncro, its a bit quirky. Try double clutching or blipping the throttle, then slowly slide it into first, thats what I did on my previous 2002 wrx wagon. Also, has the transmission fluid ever been changed? If not, change the fluid with some NON-synthetic gear oil, that may help.

If you want to see if your clutch is going out - floor it in 5th gear on the freeway - if the rpms shoot up and the car does not accelerate, then its time for a new clutch.

the clutch seems a little twitchy? do you mean that once in while, usually when your car has been off for a while, the clutch will shake/rapidly twitch when you let it out? That is cold clutch chatter, i have the same issue with my 02. Basically, the clutch compound is not warm yet, so it slips. no biggie.

and yea, i agree with Subie OCD, the 1st gear syncro is crappy. i put a tranny cocktail in my 02, and that really helped my 4th gear syncro. if you want the mix, let me know. and if you don't, just make sure you put NON-synthetic gear oil in the tranny.
