engine swap
heres a question does anyone know if you can swap a 1.8 for a 2.2 and the reason that im asking is because i have the stock 1.8 in my 95 impreza and the motor is shot after 5 years of redline between every gear and the only thing that i can get my hands onto here in tennessee is a 2.2.
so im just wondering if it will bolt up cause i know i need to change the wiring harness just wondering if the motor will bolt up thank you.

Make sure to use the 1.8 throttle body, and not to use the knock sensor, and the rest is basically re-pluging things back in and getting the vacume lines to work properly. You might have to fabricate a block off plate or two for the throttle body and IAC, but that depends on the specific 2.2 (the block of plate = just a cut piece of sheet metal in the apropriate shape, no biggie)

I just found out something interesting about the N/A 2.2... If you want, you can get a crank from a 2.5 and it will stroke the 2.2 to a 2.35 with almost a 10 for compression ratio too
Good stuff. Should be worth 7-15hp right there.

I just swapped an ej22 in for an ej18 and have been having some problems with erratic idling. I am going to swap the throttle bodies this weekend, since my 2.2s IACV is mounted on the intake manifold-PITA to come off for some reason, maybe theres a bolt i cant find. but anyway, what about the knock sensor? why would you not use it out of curiosity?
I have a 95 impreza 1.8 that I swapped to a 2.2. I had almost zero problems because the 1.8 intake will bolt right up to the 2.2 so there is no need for harness or ecu swapping.
Also if you want you can buy stock SVX pistons and they fit perfect in the 2.2 and they are much higher compression. I also ported and polished the heads and sent the cams to Schneider racing cams in San Diego and got a 256 duration grind and it runs like a rocket.
All fairly easy to do and cheap. The only problem I found is it knocks and pings at low altitude (I am at 4000feet) and the 1.8 cars didn't have knock sensors
