Contemplating a Subaru engine swap...
in my 2000 Porsche Boxster S. I have a shop that wants to try this, but I need to know if it is possible to get 450-475 crank horsepower with multi-year reliability assuming the car is somewhat of a daily driver (~25% leadfoot for 600 hours/year), 10 track days per year (90% leadfoot for 20-30 hrs/year) and up to 10 AX's per year (75% leadfoot for 2 hrs/year). The engine would have to be model year 2000 or newer (I live in CA) and I need to think of the 4 bangers only the shop has no desire to try the 6 cyllinder engines). The daily driving would be on 91 octane gas while the track and AX days would be on 100 or 101 octane gas.
This has come up rather suddenly and I need to decide what to do with my car as the engine has expired. I would go ahead with the swap if I could eventually achieve the 450-475 reliable hp goal, with the ideal plan being installing a minimum cost engine with the correct internals to allow for hp growth and changing out external components over time. I haven't had the time to become fluent in the language and lore of the various Subaru offerings other than learning that closed deck engines are better than open deck for reliability, forged internal parts are a necessity for high hp and that there is a bewildering array of parts and tuners available. I would like to know what my options are (if any) if the initial monetary outlay for just the complete engine is ~$4000.
I would really appreciate any thoughts on the possibility of accomplishing this swap, so please take pity on a non-Subaru owner.
Thanks,
Bruinbro
