For those of you contemplating a unichip...

And maybe something that will lend an idea into what's going on with Pat's UTEC:

Did you also install the ABC? If not then you are going to be slow.

If you were already running the GFB controller at 16psi and didn't remove it, then it is still going to be about the same performance, because 1. We retard timing quite a bit from the factory level (sometimes as much as 36 degrees) and 2 we tune for about the same boost as you are running now.

On the up-side, you should run safer than with an MBC alone since your timing is better setup for the higher boost you run and your air fuel ratio has been change to help make up the power.

We've told many customers that have very fast times on stock ECU cars that they will most likely get slower with a unichip since we are actually pulling timing from the top end...

When in doubt, add more boost!
So the Unichip is for safety and for driveability - not necessarily pure 1/4 mile e.t.

Still a worthwhile addition, and necessary when upgrading injectors/fuel pump but not the rosetta stone of speed that I had hoped.

But what's stopping you from asking them to tune it how you want?

Could you ask them to increase timing from 5000 rpm on up (and maybe some on the low end, as well)

Richard,

Check out the dialogue I've got going on on WRXhackers. I have no idea that I've got going on

http://wrxhackers.com/modules.php?na...ic&p=1224#1224

Along with what Nathan said in the other post, I'm seeing a 'delta' between safe tuning and speed tuning. Neither is telling me how I should set timing. The WRXHackers is telling me that the knock indicator I've been relying on might not be very accurate, and Nathan is saying that the base map I've been using is tuned conservatively.

I dont' feel like I'm making any headway.

seriously though, I though we talked about you leaning things out a bit and advancing the timing a little at a time?? At a constant psi.

What we really need to do is probably get the road dyno. So far people are getting pretty accurate readings from this.
http://www.charm.net/~mchaney/homedyno/dynokit.htm

This is the same unit that projectWRX and mynew02 are using IIRC and both are doing road tuning with it. mynew02 has the exact setup I will have pretty soon with the same turbo and a LINK.

Mitch,

That's a pretty good idea. I think I'm going to try to put some dollars together. Might not be for a few weeks, though.

Sean,

I know we talked about it, but I'm still taking it slowly. What was holding me back was a quote from Nathan at TXS who said that if I was running anything but 'rich' in the logs, then I was too lean. Also, when I made some aggressive runs, my logs were telling me that I had knock...now I'm finding out that those might have been false readings.

I need you looking over my shoulder.

Maybe if I can get it together this weekend and get you back over to the autocrafts shop, we can take it down to the gulch and do a few passes and tuning.

Hey I will get my serial connection for my link this week hopefully. Perhaps I can join you in some logging runs

Pat,
sounds good to me, the question is though, ... are you going to have time?

Mitch,
maybe I can get that WB project from you and finish putting it together for you?

A few other reasons,

the 100% IDC, the fact that TXS says that anything in my A/F logs that doesn't say 'rich' is too lean, and the fact that my CEL is always on, therefore I doubt I'd be able to see it flash if I knocked. (I don't think I can rely on the UTEC and the UTECLogger any longer for showing knock).

Beyond that, I'm ready to start tuning.

hearing the ping, ping = ok

hearing a hole blown in a piston (unless the warranty covered) = bad

I'm seriously thinking about the road dyno Mitch talked about. I figure that if readings are at least consistent, that would probably do the trick.
