I get the part about when you want to shift, but when do you let the clutch out for 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th? I am in a 2000 Wagon 2.2L and I just cant seem to get the hang of it.... every once in a while I will get those *sweet* sets of shifts, but other than that my friends heads look like bobblehead dolls... It isnt *that* bad, but I wanna get so there is no transitional pause between gears... is it just time? and can someone please explain why the clutch costs twice as much to replace on a subaru than on any other car???? I bought a stick cuz they are cheaper and it cost me 500 for parts and labor.... BS!!!... this was way too long.....

Practice makes perfect! The more you drive your car the better your shifting will get. before you know it you will be shifting smoother and faster than an automatic tranny. As far as the clutch costing so much.....well, I dunno what to tell you other than AWD demands a stronger clutch than your average 2wd cars. If your car is indeed AWD, that is.

the key to getting a smooth shift is actually not in the speed, well it is, but not how you're thinking. you want to match revs with wheel speed. on downshifts this means blipping the throttle (while moving the shift lever) while you have the clutch in and then let out the clutch. on upshifts, this means allow a very slight pause between gears so that the revs drop to the correct speed for the next gear. also, don't slip the clutch in any gear but first, meaning if you have the clutch depressed keep your foot off the gas. someone posted a good article on here not long ago, do a search for "shifting" and it should come up in the results, you might have to sift through some stuff that's not related to find it, but it was a fairly recent thread.

One of the keys to smooth shifting in normal driving, especially from 1st up to 2nd, is staying on the accelerator until the clutch is fully disengaged, as opposed to letting up when you begin depressing it. Otherwise you'll drop the rpms while still in gear, causing the car to lurch. It's best to wind it out a bit.
I make that mistake occasionally from 2nd to 3rd, especially when accelerating really hard. The car will slow suddenly and unexpectedly. The first time it happened I was afraid it was the car, but later realized it was my timing.
If you stay on the accelerator too long you'll race the engine, but that's easy to avoid.
the hardest gear and will be for all eternity to get smooth is that freaking 2nd gear..
u have to wait for bout 2 seconds for the revs to drop then ease out the clutch or else ...she gets mad...treat her gently ...patience is key...touch her softly...caress her shift ****...gentley ease into gear...let go of clutch..rinse ..repeat ..and pat dry
works for me

the only gear you want to slip in is 1st. the key is to stay off the throttle until the clutch is fully re-engaged and to get totally off the throttle the moment the clutch is disengaged
