well we know the rest of the story. But don't blame KWSUPRA's silliness on the car. It's not my cup of Java, but it's a good car.

Car Info: 2004 Subaru WRX STi World Rally Blue with Silver BBS wheels WICKED!!
Time to chime in as an owner of both a 1999 Electric Green SVT Cobra and a 2004 Subaru STi. Completely different rides that satisfy completely different visceral feelings. In the big picture of life, a Cobra handles pretty damn good, good enough to hunt down more than a few M3's in the twisties, and that was with the stock suspension. The Eibach Pro kit only enhanced cornering more. The sound of a DOHC 4.6 l V8 at full song coming out of a Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust system is a hell of a lot of fun and it pulls hard well into the 140-150 mph zone with my 3.73 gears which are optimal for making top speed in 5th gear. I never upgraded to a 2003 Cobra, because the 1999 with its Aluminum block tips the scales at only 3340lbs, your 3700 lb quote is also high for an 03. Put a good driver in a Cobra on the street and you'll quickly find you have your hands full.

As for the STi, what can I say, its handles phenomenally, its wicked fast, but I'm sure if I tried to duplicate those 4.5 sec 0-60 times , I'd be replacing clutches quite frequently. Not what this car was built for. I wanted a 4 season pocket rocket and got one. One of the best turbo systems I've ever experienced, and the DCCD makes winter driving a real treat! Lock it up in slop, or leave it in auto for most conditions. Major fun!! Too bad most of the West coast guys never experience this car in snow!!! Then they'd really see the DCCD shine!!!

Back in 1999, most of the *** performance cars had left our shores. I experienced one of their abortions in my 1994 RX7 that was very poorly federalized with its screwed up EGR's. Best looking car ever though IMHO. They are all on the track now because unless you spent 5K to straighten out their screwed up plumbing, you'd better have been best friends with a Chiropractor to deal with all the whiplash that occurred around town as the throttle body opened and closed.
Supra's and 300Zx's were both awesome cars along with VR4's but the prices they were asking were ridiculous. Case in point is our STi and its price a decade later v the 40-55K prices these cars carried 10 years ago which is like 50-60K now!!
at 28500 in 1999, and when I bought my Cobra for $26775 it was a hell of a value v. a 43-45+K BMW M3. 20K in mods (isn't that why we buy sports cars anyway, to mod them eventually as a hobby, etc) can give you a 500Hp terror that puts out 400+ at the wheels.

Times change, cars change, I've changed. If both cars were available back in 1999, I'd have taken the STi because of its 4 season prowess. but, I've never had a car get more compliments than my 1999 SVT Cobra. People love the color, the sound, the feel, let's face it, its about as AMERICAN as you can get!! Built like ****, but goes like snot!! and you can't kill'em!!!

I guess as long as Mustang loving rednecks and middle aged divorced single woman are around the Mustang will live for ever. If you want an All-American sports car get a Vette! Mustangs are even crappier cars than Camaro's and they [Camaro's] weren't all that great to begin with.

Anybody can slap a big V8 engine into a car and make it go fast. That's what seperates the American car companies from the rest of the world. Everybody else actually engineers their cars for performance, efficiency and reliability. It's only now that American car companies are catching up to the *** and European car companies. Unfortunatley, the American car industry is still behind the power curve due to lagging technology and engineering.

Just take a look at NASCAR! NASCAR is a direct reflection of the American auto industry; old technology, close minded and no innovation. Compare NASCRAP to auto racing on a global level an you can see how far behind they really are. It is only when American car companies collaborate with ***/European auto makers that they actually turn out a good product.

Luckily, I beleive that American car companies have opened their eyes to new technologies and are now trying to emulate their competitiors overseas, while they are still far away from catching up at least they are trying. All it takes is to have an open mind and good buisiness sense to see what people (on a global level) really want....ie Neon SRT4.

NASCAR's stringent rules are there for a reason, to control costs. They've done that rather well considering the exploding interest in the sport and the money that's required ANYWAY to field a car in an increasingly competitive field these days. Even with carbs and pushrod engines, teams are spending millions in R&D with different head/manifold/combustion chamber combinations, head porting/valve combinations, valvetrain mods, etc. etc. etc. Compare that to F1, where top teams like Ferrari and McLaren spend 300-600 million a year to field two cars. You could compare it to CART and the IRL too; when CART had all the engine manufacturers a few years ago, costs skyrocketed to the moon and it was the major factor in nearly killing the series. The IRL was cheap then. Now that the IRL has the engine manufacturers and CART is running spec V-8 Cosworths, its far, far cheaper to field a CART team for a full season.
Personally, I think its a little shortsighted to call it NASCRAP. Take a run on a roadcourse in any regional NASCAR series car (Southeast, Southwest, etc.) and you'll agree that these cars are thundering, smoking fast.

I agree with you on the American manufacturers take though. Nearly criminal levels of non-innovation, money spent on silly technology instead of build quality, and the continued use of outdated suspension and engine technology. Bad, very bad.

The Mirror,

You're right, a NASCAR (the actual car) is a pretty amazing machine considering how much money the companies have to fund their teams and cars. I guess I'm just a bit jealous that we here in the U.S. are not privilleged enough to have the caliber of racing that is found in both Europe and Japan.

My opinion in my last post is also biased due to the fact that I'm surrounded by rednecks, 5.0's[Mustangs] and people who only like NASCAR. All I hear is NASCAR this Mustang that, it drives me nuts! Even Speed Channel has sold out to the NASCAR crowd and it really upsets me. I remember back in the day when Speed Channel was Speed Vision and they always had Rally, F1, GT series and even lawnmower racing. Now all you get is 99% NASCAR and 1% everything else at about 1AM.

Maybe in the future NASCAR will get out of the dark ages and into the now. Maybe Toyota will light a fire under thier butts and cause them to revamp their technologies (NASCAR Truck series). In either case it's not the cars that stink, it's the people who run the program.

Heh heh, I definitely know what you're talking about. That would drive me nuts too, the "NASCAR this, Mustang that" BS. I'd have to wear a helmet everywhere because I'd be banging my head on the wall all the time.
The SpeedChannel thing is a true travesty. F**king NASCAR talk shows (!) instead of primo global motorsports coverage. Well, I'll have a TiVo soon so I guess that helps solve it for me. SpeedChannel sellout. Hideous.
Toyota is going to seriously ruffle feathers in NASCAR Trucks, it might take a year or two before they are competitive.

I guess I'm sympathetic to the NASCAR cause because I grew up on Sprint Car tracks. I'm also from California, which means I've had lots of exposure to all kinds of fast machinery. A nice balance here.
Cheers,

LOL. I'm glad we see eye-to-eye regarding this issue. I wonder what everyone else thinks? I'm sure I'm gonna get blasted for some of the comments I made in my first post but that's the purpose of a forum; to share information and points of view.

I just kinda read this whole thing and laughed.

Why I read the whole thing I'm not sure.

"My car is better than yours"
"No its not"
"Yest it is"
"No its not"
"Yes it is"

Even worse.
"A car I don't have is better than a car you don't have."

Lets have some bananas shall we

Sorry if that offends anyone. But this was just silly.
