Question - Experienced Radar Users
I have a Passport Solo S2 cordless, a couple months old.
A couple things happened recently that have scared me:
1) On I-95 a trooper was clocking traffic in the opposite direction. He was standing outside of his car, in the median, pointing it at traffic like a rifle. My detector didn't make a peep! Is radar so precise that my detector couldn't find it????
2) Driving through a development, a cop was sitting in a parking lot, seemingly a speed trap. He had what looked like radar equipment on his dashboard. Again, drove right by him with my detector silent! Luckily, I wasn't speeding.
This has me worried. My detector goes off around banks, school busses, etc... But now with at least one instance of guaranteed radar (the trooper) my detector was silent. Could my detector be bad? $300 wasted?
Thanks for any thoughts....

well first of all cordless radar detectors do not work as well. But in tests the passport 8500 has always beat the V1 when it comes to accuracy and range.

the passport 8500 is a good radar detector though. it would be my second choice.

My buddy's V1 wasnt picking up stuff like it used to so he sent it back and had it fixed. There is a chance your detector is out of calibration. I don't know how escort works but valentine charged him $30 to check his detector but they refunded it when they sent his back. After his came back we put my passport 8500 and the V1 next to each other in his truck. Both of them seemed to pick up targets at the same time. The V1 was a bit more sensitive when the radar was behind us but not by much. So it appears both detectors are about the same. I got the 8500 just because it was $100 less than the V1. If they were the same price I probably would have gotten the V1 because I like the directional arrows it uses.

First, let me say that if he was standing outside of the car aiming his "radar" at you like a gun, it was most likely laser. Laser is much harder to pick up and if you've got a cordless, it's pretty likely it just missed it. Cordless detectors honestly don't do as well as they tend to be in Power Conservation mode a lot of the time.
Having said that. I own BOTH the Passport 8500 and the V1. I've used them both extensivly and I can honestly say I like the V1 better. The V1 in "Advanced Logic" mode falses much less than the 8500 in "Auto Mode" That's not to say it's any less sensative as it's not. The V1 does an excellent job and has warned me many times well in advance. The 8500 does a good job as well, but frankly, I get sick and tired of it going off every time a dog crosses the road. That's why the V1 is in my car and the 8500 is in my wife's car. I told her I was giving her the "new" radar detector when I installed it for her and I said I'd keep my old one. Truth be told, I ran with the 8500 for a while and I just like the V1 better.

It could have been laser or instant-on radar........some radars only work when they are aimed and the trigger is pulled rather than running radars that stay on all the time. If the cop didn't pull the trigger you wouldn't get a beep. That being said.....the V1 saves me daily and while I don't have any experience with the cordless passport, I'd cough up the money for the V1....it's saved me enough to pay for itself 50 times.

cordless detectors aren't that good, they have very limited radar scanning due to them not having a good enough power source. Get something you can plug in. i say get the either V1, passport 8500, or Bel 980. All those are good.

I just bought the V1 and hardwired it last week. I was looking at the passport, bel, etc and decided to spend the extra cash for the V1. I also have heard negative things about cordless detectors in general for all of the power saving reasons that were already mentioned.

HEY, just thought of this, we should get a V1 group buy, bring down the price a bit
