Though my dream is within the realm of possibilty via economies of scale.
All of the individual parts that make up the whole would be sourced from current production products. Its just a matter of building up the pieces Lego style around a chassis thats already in place, the A6.
The W8 motor could be used but thats reserved for the Phaeton (or the Passat in detuned fashion) and less spirited applications. No, the S4 bi-turbo V8 is small, compact and been around in various guises & uses for some time. The V-10 is all aluminum and quite compact in design & size and weighs less about the same as the bi-turbo V8.
The suspension, trans and AWD could all be sourced from current production models (Allroad & Touareg) including even most of the interior (front & rear seats, dash, switchgear, etc.). As for the handling & performance I beg to differ. The chassis as I imagine it would be just about the lengthof a sedan but only have two long doors or possibly 2 standard plus 2 suicide doors for rear seat entry.
Think AMC Eagle 4x4 coupe gussied up with leater, HID's, Alcantra, and a 0-60 in 5.6 seconds.
Oh and yes I'm dreaming of a $55K Paris to Dakar 'style' coupe with luxury, thst no stretch at all as its been done many a time before (C4 & Quattro Sport Coupe). Nothing is impossible my friend when there is a market...see how weare getting a $32K supercar loosely based/styled after a $300K+ WRC car.
Reality begins with dreams...

the way you've described it, it now makes sense. i'd initially thought that you'd wanted to cram everything into a package the size of a Focus or a 206. with that sort of wheel base, and the big V8 up front, it would't handle too well i'd imagine. however, with the extra wheelbase of an A6 sized chassis, that wouldn't be a problem.
i'd love to see Audi put something like that together, even if it was nothing but a concept car. the other thing that i'd add to the wishlist would be electronically adjustable sway bars (front and rear independent control), with the controls mounted in the cockpit, and GPS navigation built into the dash. i dunno if you could get that for $55k, but it'd be one hell of a worthwhile option.

Audi doesn't have the ***** to do something like that. They're targeting the luxo-market (Benz/Lexus) instead of the sport market (BMW) that Piech said they were.
The new A8L and Nuvolari's proof of this. They make great cars with great motors, but the dealer network leaves a LOT to be desired, btdt and they have this thing about making their cars big, fat, understeering pigs...which that A6 based 4.2TT coupe would be.
That's why I'm a scooby-head now. Audi doesn't make sports coupes any more (They haven't since the S2) and they're great for all weather luxury cars like my 2003 S8.

VW isn't exactly picking up the slack either in the enthusiast dept. Yeah, the R32 is coming out but its really nothing special at all to anyone other than a VW fan.
Too bad.

right now, i'm betting that Mexico gets a WRC event befor we do. why? first of all there are the legal issues and the economics of it. liability here is so insane, that there is no way they're going to let spectators stand 4 meters off of a hot Special Stage. also, how do you charge admission for a special stage? the answer is pretty simple, you can't. there is also the concern that people won't be into it, which is reasonable, considering our defacto national motorsports are NASCAR and illegal street racing -- left turns and straight lines.

I just don't get what those people along the roads on SpeedChannel are thinking! Especially being on the back side of a big jump!
But then I also don't understand the attraction of round n' round racing. The cars are cool and everything but they only turn left...watching 300+ miles of that bores me after about 20 minutes. And the voices of those announcer guys, oye vey!
I'd like to see more truck racing though, and I'm not talking the NASCAR with a bed Craftsman series. The euro's have real 'big rigs' racing on tight closed circuits in nearly stock congifguration. Now thats fun and exciting to watch. Also it would be cool to see a US version of the Paris to Dakar only make it a Maine to Florida to Colorado to Alaska timed stage endurance event across federally owned and private land (off-highway). Now that would be fun and challenging!
BTW rumor is that Nissan will bring the next gen Skyline 'R' series to the US rebadged as an Infiniti with all manner of luxury and costing upward of $80K. Maybe those used $40K right hand drive Skylines folks are selling isn't too bad a deal after all.

the only NASCAR rounds i ever watch are Sears Point and Watkins Glen. there are maybe four NASCAR drivers that know how to turn right.

I know, i was kinda dreaming.... but still, i think there is potential. plus there are scca rallies, which are gaining popularity. but look at it, if all of the evo wrx and sti continue to be successful i think other companies would start bringing in compact awd monsters. I know that i'd pay to watch a rally... Oh and Janq, as cool as the skiyline is, it isn't all that compact and is not really in the same "class" as these cars except for the AWD, V-6 tt vs single turbo 4.
still, if Nissan brought them to the US as a real sports car, not some faux-luxo sports status symbol, i'd buy one (assuming it wasn't selling for $80k).
