I really have not driven enough on the STI to give my thoughts on what is better. Personally, I love both cars. Both are so different, but the same(if that makes any sense). Either way, whichever one you pick, you will be extremely happy. At this time I would have to say get both because I honestly cannot say. I will pm you when I am able to really get into the car after the break in period. There are alot of topics on this, if you search, you might be able to get a couple of threads that have been discussed. I will pm you my thoughts on both prob. about in a month. PM me if I forget!

There are several existing Evo vs STi purchase threads in i-Club's Car Lounge sub-forum. Using the Search feature will turn up most of them. Try key words 'evo sti' once you have entered that forum.
If you plan on just using the car for daily commuting and no track (road course) days, autocrosses, or rallycrosses, then either car will work out - won't make much difference for most commuting. Both are a little harsh if you have a family to transport for longer trips, though.
Check with your insurance to see what they want to insure the Evo or STi - that might also help you with your decision since you'll likely be financing again.

Yep, probably a ton of other threads.
Most say that the Evo handles better, but outside of brute cornering force or, subjectively, appearance, the STi is better to live with. Definitely a better interior.
Except the seats. The Evo's Recaro seats rule, just as much as the STi seats suck.

We have a black leather (Sun and Sound) EVO IX (in Black paint) that is just awesome. The seats, and the reach to both the steering wheel and pedals is just perfect ~ my mind is so convinced it's one of my old race cars that I see only the view from a full face helmet! The black leather Recaros are to die for, just about as perfect of seat that's ever been made.
Look at the pedals on the EVO. The brake and gas are grouped right up close to each other, with TONS of room to the left for your clutch foot to work like a madman. You won't be tripping here. Look at the pedals on the STI ~ same pedestrian layout as my Impreza OBS (yeah, I got the aluminum ones too).
There are only two big pluses for the STI that I can see/feel/think. That is the EVO center dif is crude, three positions and nobody says what the split is on the three position buttons (like an old Plymouth). AND the build quality of the Subaru appears to be better.
What pluses are there for the EVO? Here in the NW you won't see yourself 5 times a day and a 100,000 miles of power train warranty is enough to leave mine bone stock (at the engine anyways) for the full term of the warranty! A Recaro interior and an interior that's not BLUE. And jammin' good tunes in the Fun & Sun (unlike our Suby OEM's!).
But, still looking at each everyday ~ driving each at least once a week... I haven't any idea which I should buy. I know it won't be the EVO 10. This IX is the classic! Just as I have the feeling the '05 STI will be ;-)
Well, here's another "which one?" thread. Drive both, and make your decision. If you care about the ease and cost of mods, get the Evo. If you care about reliability, get the STi. I personally find reliability to be more important than the price of mods.
I drove both, and I liked everything about the STi more except for the seats.

evo seats invade my dreams...
so does the sti gauge cluster...
and boost is truly a beautiful thing...
but filling up on 87 octane washes those dreams right away. keep your civic. going from 30mpg to 15 will be no fun. why do you NEED a fast car? is your manhood that lacking?

damn.. ive seriously seen too many of these threads on every online website and in every auto magazine.. i think in 07 when i get back from iraq i may just pick up a Evo IX.. just to have both lol.. i've had my 05 STi payed off since like march 06.. i dunno im just talking dumb, but these are the best cars in my opinion..
u really cant compare them man, i mean i love my STi to death.. couldnt see myself driving a regular Evo, would have to be an MR.. but thats just me..
we can go over pros and cons but ultimately they are the same car, not exactly but in reality they are so similar.. i do like the Evo's look a little more, but at the same time i love the STi and how it looks..
out here in Hawaii, the Evo is a lot less popular.. more expensive too.. MR's are going for 42,000, regular 8's and 9's are 35 out the door.. subaru doesnt play games, i got my 05 brand new for 34,300 out the door.. but when ur paying 34,000 a few thousand matters but its not paramount..
my best friend has an 05 evo 8 and hes happy with it.. just buy one, u wont regret it.. ull enjoy both of them equally.. ur *** will be a little more comfy in the evo.. but ur interior will be much better in STi.. just drive both and u'll see

Stiiiii
i test drove both cars recently, because i'm also in the market. and as a current impreza driver(99 RS) and a subaru advocate, i'd have to go with the STi. It just felt a lot better then the evo did, and it shifted smoother, in my opinion. tough choice, but on the suby forum, gotta go with subaru

I know a lot of Evo owners and the story is the same across the board. They ALL mention first and foremost how much more they like the interior of the STi, and how much better the quality is.
These same Evo owners make mention "I'm not taking my car to the track with the factory clutch. The clutches in these cars suck and I'm not risking it."
Not to mention, most Evos do have more problems than STis, so Subaru has the board covered on reliability.
I've loved the STi since 1994, but that didn't stop me from taking out an Evo for a test drive. I felt much more in control of the STi because the handling was not as twitchy. Not to mention, the STi's ride is not as punishing as that of the Evo, but it's by no means soft. In fact, I think the STi rides quite harshly.
As for the aggressive looks, the STi looks very aggressive unless it's sitting directly next to an Evo. The Evo has a much wider stance to it and it also looks like it sits lower. It most definitely has looks that state that it means business.
Both cars are so close in performance aspects that you can't go wrong, regardless of which you choose, but if it's reliability that you're after, it's STi all the way.
