2.5L Impreza engines are troublesome?
If you're really pushing for lower price, why not start with an older L instead, and upgrade as necessary? Granted, it's an even lighter body, but of course, your engine and suspension are less capable - but you will upgrade that down the road anyway...

it'd probably be a lot of trouble to find one out of province.
I was also thinking of a Legacy as another possibility. In Gran Turismo 3, there's this highly tuned Legacy wagon... aw man... it made me drool...
However, I'm sure Legacies get not that great gas mileage, eh? plus the phase 1 problems...
