what are the differences between the 2.2 and the 2.5 engines from...say a 98 or 99 mo

I'm wondering, because I may want to buy a Subie Impreza in the near future, and since the 2.5RS is harder to find, and expensive in comparison with the others (2.2 I mean), I was wondering the engine differences. # of pistons...blah blah bla, all that good stuff.

2.2 and 2.5 are similar. The 2.2 is a bit more reliable, but has less displacement. Otherwise most performacne parts are shared between the two engines.(headers/Intakes)

okay thanks. thats pretty much what I was looking for in an answer. How many valves is the 2.2? I know the 2.5 is 16 right?, but is the 2.2 also 16 valve?

yes the 2.2 is a 16 valve. but not all things are compatible between the two engines. there are some 2.2's (don't remember what years) that have a different exhaust port. they only have one, vs. the 2.5 has 2. 2.2 has a totally different head and cam design. sohc-2.2 vs. dohc-2.5

cool. So how well does the 2.2 benefit from simple bolt ons to begin with? Does anyone in here have a turbo setup on their 2.2?

I though only the 97 or the 98 2.5 came in DOHC and then the 99+ switched to Single cam for more torque or something of that sort and you are able to put single cam 2.5 heads on 2.2's http://www.forcedairtech.com/FORCED-...TAGE4-KIT.html thats a link for a turbo kits for the 2.2 and the 2.5 they have a twin turbo system if your intrested
