Wow, i wonder if they were the same police officiers who did that to our guy...that's pretty messed up. They are power tripping. Such treatment from these guys..it's pretty disgusting. They need to have sometihng better to do.

First question: Were you gentlemen on UC Davis school property?

Second question: Is the person who was handcuffed a student of UC Davis?

This does suck, and there was no apparent reason for them to brutalize the guy by shoving him to the ground, but that's what cops do. He had his ID on him and did not show it, plus he would not give them his name. I bet he was wondering WTF was going on and was honestly afraid to hand over his ID, and from what it sounds like there was no REAL reason to stop him in the first place - but he essentially 'asked for it' by not complying with their requests.

Not justifying the officers' actions - just saying, if I were in that situation and did not give my name or ID when asked - I would expect the situation to escalate and expect some bullying or whatever BS from the cops. Once they detect that they have something there (PC) they will push and try to get the person to do even more things that they can write down on the ticket. They were trying to get him to fight back so they could say he was assaulting them.

Once you "open the door" for an officer, cop, chp or whatever - you really cannot complain about what they do. This is very well known. In most cases any actions they take, no matter how unreasonable they seem, are well calculated and at the very edge of being legal, however they know what they are doing and know the law way better than you do in most cases, and they use this against you.

So he runs a stop sign on his bike and then refuses to hand over ID or even give his name.

What did he expect?

That's all I am saying (you are much better at brevity). When a cop sees you do something wrong and stops you, that's +1 for the cop. If you don't own up to it and comply with everything, that's +2 and maybe a few more for the cop. Just the way it works. Also, when they searched him and actually found his ID, he became far worse than some guy who ran a stop sign (however safe that may 'seem' on a bike, it's still not).

When Mason asked to see Kornbluth's driver license, Kornbluth told him he didn't have it.
They found his driver license in his wallet, which was in one of his pockets.
Cops don't like it when they think you're lying to them.

Well, if he objected to giving the campus cops a driver's license, why not hand over a student ID? Most only have a name and picture, but no address (unless they changed that since I attended school).

Also, if he is a student, was he displaying a parking permit (even if it was temporary)?

This is totally true, and in this situation it wasn't just speculation - they had proof that they were being lied to. So, this guy took it from a simple stop sign violation to resisting and lying to an officer.

parking permit didnt matter at the time..it was past 10pm and its open parking after that. and yea i learned that if you have any questions about whats going on you get to ask them after you've handed over ID or whatever they want. now if the cops take some unreasonable action after you complied, then thats messed up and there needs to be somethin done.
