I noticed many people ask the same question I answered already. At the dealer, after we flash do the reflash, we are REQUIRED to drive the vehicle, so if you are comfortable with us driving your car after flashing it SUBARU's map and you're comfortable that those parts will definitely not mess up anything with SUBARU's map during that test drive, then by all means leave the mods on and bring it in. As a tech and dealer, we are not responsible if something breaks because the reflash we do assumes your car is stock. if you're not stock, that's not our problem, there's a reason why we write down the car is modified and there's a reason why we rejected the guy that cameback when his car kept stalling after I did the reflash on it.

but i don't want anyone taking my car out for a drive (subi tech or not), *****es stalling in front of me and **** (**** much? hell yes). think someone mentioned their tech just flashed it and didn't take it for a spin (hope that the tech i get will do the same).

Is it only me who thinks this is pretty f'ed up? If the car passes smog before the reflash, why is this even needed? And you can't smog or register without doing it? How did no one at subaru think about how this would affect modified vehicles?

Its almost as if they want people to have to go back to stock...

What about someone who has a built motor, custom turbo, intercooler, etc..

All these have to be removed to do reflash, that's a lot of parts and labor money

Subaru doesn't care about your (our) modified vehicle. And the restrictions on registration are probably partly, if not fully the fault of emissions agencies in California (and other states affected by this, perhaps riceboi can shed some light?)

If anything, subaru would probably prefer this didn't have to happen, would save them a pretty penny.

I think it is only you thank thinks it's f'ed up, as that thought is extremely closed minded. You do know that modified vehicles are in the minority don't you?

It's inconvenient, but you gotta pay to play.

While Subaru is at fault for having this error in the first place, it's California's smog laws that require the paperwork to allow you to smog your car. Blame CARB and all the hippies that live in CA, not Subaru.

Honestly I know nothing about emissions companies or their restrictions, I just do as I'm told at the dealer and pass on info that could possibly help the community. If you ask me, the reflash is another way for Subaru to attempt to fix their engineers mistakes. The reflash is mainly for the thermostat monitoring in the new system, guess they messed it up? Also I assume majority of cars are getting similar check engine lights so they decided to add the reflash to fix that as well. So normally when a car comes in for a CEL, first thing we are told to do is check for reflashes, sometimes the reflash takes care of the CEL and it'll never come back, sometimes there really is a problem. Either way I think it's a coverup for engineering mistakes.

EricInHoodRiver

Had my 2011 stage 2 wrx flashed yesterday. Unmarried ap in dealer lot, asked techs not to test drive after flash. Married my tune back and all seems perfect.

anybody talk to a local dealership that will do exactly that yet?

I took my Tribeca in to Putnam today. They flash the ecu, drive it, do the paperwork, and done. When I asked about my WRX, they said they would drive it as well.

I would imagine that if you asked nicely, they won't drive it.

I just got this done at the livermore subaru with no problems. i have downpipe, exhaust.

I told them to NOT wash the car, do NOT change my air pressure in tires, do NOT do anything other than the ECM reflash. so he noted it on the paperwork for the tech.

uninstalled my AP in the parking lot before pulling up to service. got the reflash done and got the certificate. reinstalled AP in lot again before leaving.

going to send my updated rom to COBB and my tuner so they can update maps.

*edit
also, they didn't take my car for a test drive. they just let it run in the shop for 5 minutes after reflash.

so i had my gopro running in my car in the back window, and it recorded the whole thing.

i put a note on my dash that says "please do not wash my car, please do not change my tire pressure, please do not do additional work on my car other than the ECM reflash. thank you"

my video shows one guy pointing out my note to another tech, and that tech says "well too bad for him, it's state mandate, state law that we have to check it"

ffs. we already have to deal with TPMS sensors. the tpms light isn't on which means my tire pressure is fine.

when the service guy got back into my car to drive it out of the shop, you can hear him say something like "jeeze, what is that guys problem", talking about that tech who went on whining about things

i really hate dealerships. i took my car in last year just to get a seatbelt replaced under warranty. i even completely removed the back seats of my car and everything, so it would take them only a few minutes to undo ONE bolt to put the new one on.
i get my car back and they over tightened the hell outta my lug nuts. mike and i had to remove my wheels and had trouble with getting the lugs off cause of them.
