Car is officially totaled.

Insurance is going to over night transfer of title paperwork for us to fill out and send back.

They didnt recomend buying it back because they didnt even check the motor (due to interior/exterior costing more than its worth) and dont know the condition. They dont want to sell it back and then say in 1,000 miles the motor just blow.

But they did give us a number of how much they will cut a check for.

They gave us the price of the car, plus state sales tax (for buying something new of equal value), and prorated her registration that she just paid for a month ago. Then they took out our $100 deductable, and arrive at just over $8,400.

So its a couple grand more than we thought we were going to get and thats for sure nice. Now on the hunt for a new car

That's quality insurance right there!

Have fun with the new ride.

My suggestion... 2011 Forester. I just got one for my life and it's a really nice car.

You got one for YOUR life? Not someone else's life?

Well we would look into buying a new car, but she JUST finished paying this one off in Jan (thank god too because it would suck if she still owned and the insurance money went to the loan).

We talked about her taking my wrx and me getting a new 2011 STi

But when it comes down to it, id rather be saving for a house or paying a mortgage instead of a car payment

if you want me to check how much it would be to re-key your subie thru my store I can. Its sucky that people do that stuff. We've had kids eyeballin my dad's old cadillacs, so now every car is either in the driveway or in storage.

Thanks for the offer! You live in the Bay tho?

I think it might be easier to just replace the outside locks and leave the ignition. So i would use 1 key to get in and another to start it

or maybe instead of getting re keyed maybe lojack or aftermarket alarm . i know there was a viper system that had a gps tracker and a remote with a pager style screen that gave a read out of the car .

the alarm is what i did with my previous car , i lost my keys at a party and i just got the alarm on my car and i just figured that if someone was going to steal it they would find that i knew where my car was at all times and i would at least catch a idiot and one less moron on the streets. now, when my buddy installed the alarm he took off the dash and integrated the alarm with the factory wire loom and made stock. we even had a back up battery for the actual alarm itself. no simple thief would think to check all that.

that alarm was around 200 with hookups from a friend of a friend and the friend did the install for some beer and pizza . but that system would run you around 500 installed . im not sure how much the lojack is.

*cliff notes * a good alarm with gps will maybe take a SIMPLE thief off the streets

^ I like that idea

What size was the spare battery for the alarm? Did you tie it in with the alternator so it would always be charged as well. Where did you decide to hide it?

he worked as a installer for stereo shops so he had the battery but it was no more than 3"x3"x6" and i believe it was 12 volt. it was small ish but there is plenty of room behind the dash. that car was a 08 scion so it had a large dash. behind the dash was a beam that went from a pillar to a pillar and there was room behind that . he tied it into the main cpu wireing which was like 2 inches thick it was also tied into the alternator .

do you plan on doing it yourself?

Final update (I hope lol)

Have been looking at cars on craigslist for the last week in a half. My wife has been really interested in Pathfinders (surprisingly).

So there was a dealer thats pretty close to my grandparents out in Sac. We stopped by my grandparents to say hi. Told them the update with the insurance and that we are heading to take a look at one of the cars. My grandpa offered to write us a check if we found a car we really like so we could get it now and not have to wait for insurance, then just pay him back once the money comes.

So we head out and look at the car. Its a 2002 Pathfinder (she likes the older model look compared to the newer ones). and spotless inside and some small paint chips around the car (to be expected with a 10 year old car). Its 4x4 and already has m/s tires on it. Clean title and only has had 2 previous owners. 134k so its less then average for that year. Only thing i was sketched about was if it had its 100k service done. The guy honestly didnt know.

So i got the guy down $500 on their price and got a 3yr/75,000 mile warranty added on. Then dropped a check in his lap

So we drove off with this tonight
