Colonel Conk is just a great product name either way.

Skip it. Their soaps are good, but I don't know about the rest. You can get a much better brush for less. That razor looks lame.

I'm too much of a n00b to pick up anything expensive right off the bat. Picked up a good priced badger hair brush, Proraso cream, and a Gillette sensor excel.
It can't be any worse than the way I used to shave and it was all cheaper than a decent electric razor.

When I need a close shave and I have the time I always prefer my straight razor. I don't bother with creams, and as long as your razor is sharp enough I don't think you really need them. Spend a bill or so on a good razor, a strop/sharpening block, and some strop paste and you will probably never need to spend money on shaving again. (except refilling your strop paste whenever it runs out, which is not much)
Now, I do have an electric shaver and one of those mach3 razors, but I only use those when I have zero time or when I'm still drunk from the night before. Don't shave with a straight razor when you're impaired, trust me on this one.

Last time I had to buy replacement blades for my Mach3 I tried to go the cheaper route by going with Mach3 Turbos since they are all interchangeable and they were only $5....mistake! Worst shave ever! I guess Gillette has tried to copy the oil companies by offering different grades of razors...and the price keeps going up
