whurrr whurrr whurrr sound coasting in neutral

So it seems like the car has always done this. I may be me, but it seems like it's now louder than when the car was new. It also seemed to do it when the car was cold, but then be fine after driving around for a bit.

When driving along... 30-40mph, and shift into neutral, clutch out, coasting/braking at a stop light, I can hear this oscillating noise... whurrr whurrr whurrr whurrr.

Someone tell me this is a normal subaru AWD sound.

Not sure if it's normal but I have heard others mention this noise. Do you know where it's coming from and how loud is it?

It sounds like it's coming from all around. Not necessarily a right or left sound, or a front/back sound. I asked my girlfriend if she could hear it (usually I'm paranoid and hear things that others dont) and she says she hears it.

I know that wheel bearings make a "whirring" noise when they start to go out. How many miles on the car?

If it has always done it, it's unlikely the wheel bearing. Have you changed your tranny fluid lately or checked it's levels?

I had the 30k service done by LIC only 6k miles ago. If the tranny fluid needed changing during that service, I'm sure they did it.

Do you have an aftermarket turboback?

Does it happen when the engine is turned off? Like while you're rolling and hear the sound, try turning off the engine. That makes my STi's whirring sound go away. I think it's a regular boxer sound but it doesnt happen when the car's at a stop.... strange....

it sounds to me like it could be your brakes....I know if you have a warped rotor that is periodically rubbing the pads, you will hear that sound.....or if your pads are wearing un evenly or if your pads are not aligned/seated properly, you may hear a sound like that too.

I kinda doubt that its an engine/tranny problem though.

My car is 100% stock.

It happens with the car is running. When I'm coasting to a light, for example. I'm not a mechanic, but I'm 100% sure it's not an engine noise.

It seems a little odd to shift into neutral when you are braking from 30-40mph. Why wouldn't you leave the car in gear while braking, and then press the clutch in when you are around 15mph or so? I don't know if my car makes that sound b/c I've never shifted like that before. My car is almost always in gear while its in motion...the only time I put it in neutral is if I'm idling.

I'd show up to a meet and get someone to ride with you.

When you think about it, it's really not that unusual.

If you're coming to a stop light from 40 mph, do you really shift through all the gears, sequentially, until you get to first? Sounds like alot of needless wear and tear on the clutch and the synchros, to me. Brakes are ALOT cheaper than either of those.

Anyway, I hear it while I'm doing that, not because I'm doing that.
