5th gear slips in neutral

do anyone know why my 5th gear slips into neutral when I let go of the gas on the highway. it does it 1 out of every 10 times when I go about 60mph. Just bought the car and was wondering if it was the tranny or clutch that needs replacement or adjustment. Any comment is appreciated. thanks

I have a 2000 RS with 66k and this has just started happening to me as well. Since I bought the car a few years ago with 15k it's grinded going into fifth gear about every 10th shift (I admin that I sometimes shift from 2nd to 5th if I've really wound 2nd out).
I talked to a friend's buddy who has a tranny shop and he told me that if it's been grinding then the likely problem is that the ground gear simply wont hold the gear in place any longer.
So, I'm a loser for not asking Subaru about the periodic grind (I just figured it was a bad alignment of the shifter etc) - but you'll want to check in with SOA and a local dealer to get this fixed under warranty. The sooner it's fixed the less likely additional damage will be done.
Good luck.
