white smoke when slowing and whining sound?

so, i think im going to just go for a replacement td04(can't afford to upgrade to a bigger turbo right now) what should i look for when buying a used one?
i know the obvious things like shaft play and cracks, anything else?

Didn't you say that the whining is speed dependant and doesn't matter if you're in gear or not? If so, that sounds more like a diff or wheel bearing issue. The smoke, however, does sound like a bad turbo.
