most motorcycle helmets are snell approved, i've always bought mine at either cycle gear or road rider. Cycle gear is located on Race Street in San Jose, right by 280, and Road rider is on Old Montery Highway in San Jose. i prefer Arai, but both places carry Arai, Shoei and more.

I got mine at Cycle Gear in Redwood City for $120. HJC Full faced motorcycle helmet. Snell and DOT approved. Sears Point tech approved for 13.99 or quicker as well.

Here's a pic of it.

The places mentioned have good helms. If you want, you can go try them on at those places and try to buy it somewhere online. Try Helmet Harbor, Kneedraggers, etc for good prices on helms. Good service from both, as well.

Well, it was either the helmet or the burritos, i never said buy a cheap helmet. The burritos would render me unable to race anyway so either decision will work out one way or another

If you ever want to do track racing or go beyong autocross and rallycross, you should seriously consider getting an SA rated helmet, as you can't do a "real" rally, or most track events in M rated helmets.
A good local source for some of those is IO Port racing in Lafayette.
Also a good source- if you don't mind shopping online, is racerwholesale.com

On a side note, when i do need to get a helmet, i have been eyeing the arai helmets for awhile now, i just like *****ing about how expensive stuff is.
But these are the prices of high speed fun.

be careful of what you buy!!!!
If you plan to do track days, you might want to get a SA helmet instead of a motorcycle helmet. Some of the clubs that put on events now require the SA helmets instead of the motorcycle ones. Bell Helmets has a distrobution center in Oakland and that is where I bought my snell sa 2000 helmet.
good luck and I hope you never *NEED* your helmet!
