i have been looking into the same thing. auto racing helmets are hella expensive. motorcylce helmets are a lot cheaper.
the only difference is that the auto helmets have a nomex lineing
basically a fire protection safety feature
so for general auto-x and rally-x motorcycle helmets are good enough and save you a lot of money

I just got one of these Bell's, it's a very nice helmet for a good price.

Motorcycle helmets are not as protective.
Good car helments are built to absorb MULTIPLE hits as would happen in a car as your head hits the doors/roof/cage in a roll over.
Motorcycle helmets are built for one MASSIVE blow and get weaker. The thought being that on a motorcycle your head will impact once rather hard and then you will slide to a stop.
They are NOT the same, hence the two different ratings as provided by the various safety foundations..
remember.. if you have a $10 head, get a $10 helmet!

Also, Motorcycle helmets will only work for you at an autocross (where you are wearing them for insurance purposes rather than actually needing the protection). You need SA2000 helmets to run on real race tracks like Thunderhill, Laguna Seca, and Buttonwillow.

I've tried contacting speed shops about buying helmets and they usually have the same thing to say.. "We dont' have many in stock, mail order places take all that business away from us"
Check out the helmets at SoloRacer.com. I got a G Force Pro Force Hybrid for $200 there. The fellows at the tech inspection take one look at the helmet bag where it says G Force and know I've got a good enough helmet.
Auto racing helmets are heavier duty than motorcycle helmets (as previously mentioned) and are also (more importantly) fire resistant for at least 40 seconds (nomex layers) so that you'll have time to get out of a burning vehicle before your face goes up in flames (which usually means you've burnt the insides of your lungs.. aka, you're dead). Motorcyclists don't worry about being trapped within a burning vehicle, but you should be.
