WOW, this looks like a steal. So as long as the helmet is SNELL 2005 approved, it's ok for most scca autox and track days right?

M2005, SA2005, and K2005 are legal (as are 2000 and 95) per the SCCA solo rules and the GCR. IIRC SFR requires 2000 or 2005 though.

Damn thats a good price...

Re: Motorsport legality.

Check your regs carefully, The Snell "M" designation is for motorcycle. I know that "SA" was required by SCCA for road racing competition. Not sure about autocross or other sanctioning bodies.

The "SA" helmets are built differently than the "M" because of possible impacts within a closed car environment.

Happy Motoring

Section 4.3.1 of the 2007 Solo Rule book:
All helmets meeting the current or two immediately
preceding Snell Foundation standards (SA, K, or M), or SFI standards
31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A, or 41.2A are acceptable.

Per Section 9.3.19b of the 2007 GCR:
Crash helmets approved by the Snell Foundation with Snell sticker 2000 or later Special Application (SA2000), or by the SFI with a SFI Sticker 31.1a for open faced helmets and a SFI sticker 31.2a for closed faced (if purchased prior to 12/31/04), SFI 31.1 (if purchased after 1/1/05), or by the FIA standard 8860-2004.

Per NASA's HPDE site:
The minimum rating is SNELL 1990 (SA1990 or M1990). Newer helmets with a SA rating are recommended. Eye protection is required (face shield, goggles, safety glasses). The more and better the safety equipment you have & use, the safer you will be.

They may, indeed, be legal, but there's a reason Snell M helmets are not legal for road race competition. The SA helmet is built to withstand possible side impacts to pillar or rollbar/rollcage, while the M has a different design.

Just some info to keep in mind if you're shopping for a brain bucket.

c'mon, how can you argue about a $25 helmet?! If you only plan to do solo2 then whats the big deal? I can understand the necessity for a proper helmet during raod racing but for auto-cross, I would use a bicycle helmet if it was legal!

By the way, I bought one as soon as I clicked the link.

My point exactly. I wouldn't recommend one for trackdays either.

M2005 is legal for SCCA Autocross....that said, I'd confirm the helmet is actually Snell approved (i.e. has the legal Snell stickers inside, not just "Meets Snell M2005 Safety standards) before going nuts on buying a bunch of them.

It is VITAL to get the proper helmet for your purpose.
