STi's like to make all sorts of clunks, groans, squeaks, etc.
Most likely it's the brake pads shifting around in the calipers.
You mean that's something that actually happens? That's nutty. How much "extra space" is around the pads then??

I don't follow. The idea of pads banging around in calipers and being heard regularly, audibly in the cabin seems odd as every car I have done brakes on at least has some sort of spring to keep the pad in place. I know there are reasons there would be this happening as well as similar noises usually with floating calipers, but not on a brand new car and I wouldn't think on solidly mounted calipers. Just sounded odd, but since I have never seen the '09 brake setup in person and you work on these things - I can take your word for it.

I'm no expert...maybe some other STi owners can verify...but my 2005 STi does it, my 2000 Forester does it, every customer that owns an STi does it, other Subarus with w/ Brembos do it.

The tolerance between the pad & the caliper seems a little sloppy.

It's really only noticeable at parking speeds; backing out of a spot..clunk...going forward..clunk.

I have 4pots and it happens ever time I back up and then go forward. Poor tolerances.

If I am in a driveway put it in park, let off the brake and roll back a bit till it catches in park then put the ebrake on the next time I come back and put it into reverse it 'clunks'. So I try to avoid that, doesn't sound like the same thing tho.

I would hope you would be an expert! That makes sense. I have only had a few cars with solid "monoblock" (or whatever the term is) brake calipers. My Toyota makes noises in the rear brakes in a similar fashion when it's seriously heated up (like a track day) but this is on a car w/88k miles and these are floating calipers with pins that are famous for not floating so well.

Thanks for clearing that up - knowledge is power!

Paul, would this clunk only happen when going reverse first, then forward?

See, I always park "backwards" at my apt, so I don't need to reverse out of my spot. I always get this clunk a few feet after I've started moving forward and away from my parking spot. I've had this since day 1, and assumed it's just another one of those subie noises. Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't have been hearing this clunk, as I don't reverse out of my parking spot (although I do reverse into it).
