It's complete myth.

Wheels bearings go out cause of:

1) Defective bearings (few and far between)
2) Race Cars (hard driving on the race track)
3) People who can't drive smoothly and beat on their cars and put undue load on their bearings.

you'll have to run some serious camber to get em to go but I think they'll go.
