what do i need to do in order to sell a car?
so my friend is selling his car but neither of us have ever sld one and i would like to know what needs to be done in order to do so. i know i need a Bill of sale and im going to be writing up a contract aswell and what else?
Do you own it or is there a lein on it ?
All you need to do is take it to the DMV with him and sign the paperwork there. I dont trust someone who is buying ot from me to do that. I got parking and bridge toll tickets from a car I sold because I gave them all that and they never did it.
There is a huge stickied thread about this on Nasioc.

I'm posting my GR for sale within the next few days, and I'd also like to hear tips from those that have sold their subies privately.
Do you just let anyone for a test drive? I remember seeing FS threads before where they claim no test drives w/o cash or cashier's check....

I sold my 92 Miata to this guy, and he didn't register it for almost an entire year after he bought it. I was getting the reg renewal notices and parking tickets in the mail up to 8 months after I sold the car. Luckily I still had the guy's contact info, so I called him and yelled his ear off. I ASSUME that he registered it because I never got any more letters about the registration. Bad experience though.
If you have a lawyer friend or someone who can prepare a contact for you, do that and specify that this whole thing is "as is" and no trade backs or anything like that. Get both to sign with a witness, Smog it, go to teh DMV together and cash his check.
Totally un-necessary unless there's funny business involved. AAA is the easiest if you or one person is a member. Otherwise, go to the DMV. Everything, including the "release of liability" will be handled there on the spot and you can walk away. Show up with your smog certificate and a CHECK BOOK (the DMV has not yet entered the past century and accepts only cash/check). I have owned/sold over 30 cars since I have been in the Bay Area and only had an issue with one - and that was because I did not complete the release of liability and the new owner did not register the car.
