I was told though that Rotary engines are almost bullet proof even if equipped wtih a turbo, but I doubt that's true. I know that the apex seals are an important issue, but I don't think I'm much for rotary anyway to really research it. It still amazes me that my friend with an n/a FC burns more fuel in a week than I would in a month.

No, rotary, once they turboed the wankel rotary, the reliability shot down the tubes. If you find any type of factory turbo FC or FD with an original motor above around 80k miles, that car was not driven like it was built to be. Also, they overheat pretty easily, the cooling system Mazda put it is pretty sad.
