maybe a new honda Civic.
I know this a Subie place but unless she cares about AWD it is just extra gas because of the friction. Civic will get 25mpg and it will be fine for many years.
PT Cruiser/Taurus will be doubtfull reliability and poop resale.
Used Audi and BMW stay away. Every time she visits the dealership with something electronic broken she will be unhappy.
SRt4 she will pay too much insurance and does she really need all the performance?
Hyundai may be a good idea. they have improved quite a bit and they are very reasonably priced. Kia as well. Same company.
Regards
Nick

For 12K you're not going to find a better quality car.
You can probably beat this price by a few hundred:

I also meat it would get 35 mpg not 25

They have those crazy deals that you can lease a new Civic for like $159 a month or something? Maybe she can buy it with something simmilar.
