Oh, and this article (which supports your position) is a bit better. Still a speculation article, but the use of a few more sources gives it a bit more credibility:

There is no such thing as a draft. The military does NOT want there to be a draft, because those in charge remember how sh1tty the armed services were back in the day when they were full of pissed off angry 19 year olds who did NOT want to be there. An undermanned volunteer force will kick the crap out of a huge conscript force any day of the week.
Anyways like I was going to say, those papers you guys got in the mail were Selective Service forms. All it is for is a list so the government can draft you IF the country is actually threatened by another military force. I highly doubt any of us will live to see another draft.

You know.. it never ceases to amaze me how people jump to all the wrong conclusions about the military, selective service, and the draft.
You know all those freedoms you enjoy? The rights and liberties you hold so dear that you take for granted? Those freedoms were won by soldiers who bled for you.
"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."
- George Orwell
It's an honor to serve the country you choose to call your home, to help pay for the freedoms we all enjoy, and know that you do a job few would be ready, willing, and able to do, all so that your families and friends can enjoy the freedoms afforded by this society. The military is a unique profession. I know that I am set apart from everyone else, because I choose to put on a military uniform, and am able to do a job few can do.
You may not agree with the politics involved, but being in the military makes you apolitical when it comes to doing a job. You are a professional. It doesn't matter who is in the Oval Office. As a soldier, you take an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and bear true faith and allegiance to the same. If voters choose to elect a president, that person is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States, and is THE BOSS. It is irrelevent what your personal political leanings are, you do the job you sign up to do. No where in the constitution does it mention political parties. The military does not care who is in the White House. It does its job regardless.
I will stop now before I get started on a really really long rant about the ungrateful masses who deride the military profession for doing a necessary job that others can't or won't do. Suffice to say that I don't think there will ever be another draft, at least no in my lifetime, and that is speaking from 13 years of military service and counting. This is an all-voluntary military, and I expect it to remain that way.

I said that reinstatement is a possibility, but also I warned that the article you linked has no credible source coming out and saying that the draft will come back. That author is simply speculating and not all of what they say is "fact".
So calm down.

Shadowcat, very eloquently put. I agree that the chances for a draft are slim to none. I certainly don't lose any sleep over it and I applaud every person who is willing to put on a uniform. My wife's dad is a career military guy, colonel in the Army reserves. He went to Iraq the first time and he was in Bosnia more recently. Regardless of whether you believe in the war, it's waaay too late to pull out, so maybe it's time to start thinking of ways we can help the Iraqis' instead of berating ourselves for going to war in the first place.

+1 shadowcat, GREAT post. Thanks for serving.
-10 all of you whiners.
I'd go in a second if called. And let's wait until this makes it to something other than a bush hating propaganda site.

before you all get your panties in a bunch im going to fill you in on something you didn't know and try to put it in terms you can understand.
Say John Doe enlists for 4 years active duty in the military and gets out in january of 2004 and never wears a uniform again for the rest of his life.
What John Doe and a lot of you didn't know was that he the day he signed his life away at MEPS he also signed an Inactive Reserve contract too. That means he is unknowingly (or knowingly
) serving another 4 years of inactive reserve just in case sh*t hit the fan!
Why send a bunch of unmotivated 18 year olds without a lick of training when they could send in the 22yr old with 4 years under his belt that already has $100,000.00 of training invested in him!?
If you served 3 years active duty or active reserve then you'd have 5 years inactive reserve....5 years active, 3 years inactive reserve. Just subtract 8 years from your initial enlistment contract and presto!
So... Uncle Sam would re-enlist those like myself on inactive reserve as a LAST RESORT after already sending the actual reserves. So if they send the reserves in your area DON'T PANIC because you still have a lot of breathing room. When USASOC gives me a call and says they need me again after they've already exhausted all the Reserve regular Units and Special OPs units then i'll let you know
If/When that happens i suggest you either enlist airforce reserve and get a easy desk job
, close shop and move to South America or grab your ***** and grab an M4.
That's exacly what happened in Vietnam! Those that didn't want to get shot at enlisted for a "kick-back' job. Hell, my uncle did this back in the day too.
