after watching bellinelli in the last few games, here's my take.....

in a nutshell, he's better than i thought.

his handles and effort on D are what surprise me the most. he's also a lil quicker than i expected. he's definitely playing w/a lot of confidence ever since Nellie committed to using the rest of the season to audition the newbs. i think helps Marco a lot that the squad is shorthanded right now too. he doesn't have to worry as much about being benched if he messes up, so there's less pressure on him. with more guaranteed minutes & shots available, he's been playing well

all of that said, i think it's way too soon to get too sprung on bellinelli. yes, he's playing pretty well lately, but, with the exception of last night's miraculous win, the rest of the games have been blowout losses. so it's a lil difficult to tell just how effective he's really been.

imo, marco's better suited coming off the bench for a few reasons that primarily stem from his inferior speed & quickness.....

1. He struggles to create own shot or break down defenders to get to the FT line and set up scoring opportunities for his teammates. this is less of an issue when he plays off the ball, but he's currently running the point. in today's league, speed (or lack thereof) kills. you gotta have someone at the 1 that puts constant pressure on the defense and draws defenders.

2. He gets trapped w/the ball, esp on the sidelines & baseline, too often. he needs to move the ball sooner and not dribble into trapping situations. his lack of that extra gear that most starting guards have to split & avoid being double teamed inhibits his ability to play heavy minutes (on a squad that's not hampered by injuries)

3. He has trouble containing opposing guards. He did pretty well w/Ray Allen, but Ray's mainly a jumpshooter nowadays. In the preceding games, Marco got beat pretty reguarly by quicker guards, incl Jameer Nelson and Mario Chalmers. he shouldn't have as much trouble w/D-Fish tomorrow, but Farmar probably would own him had he not injured his knee (get well soon, Jordan!)

all in all, marco's progressing. he's young and still has things to learn, but he has a chance to be a good back-up if he keeps working hard. like TurnWRX said tho, i doubt he'll get many minutes when Jamal, Monta, & Corey get back, but if he keeps grinding and shooting well, at least he'll gain Nellie's confidence. but part of me wonders if Nellie's also giving him more burn to try and increase his trade value. W's still need a dependable PG, and if they could package him w/ Wright or Randolph for one, i think they'd pull the trigger. Nellie's not getting any younger, and he's definitely not gonna be content (or last) very long just playing babysitter.

props to marco & the warriors on another good game. i'm finally beginning to see why they wanted to take a chance on him. he is a pretty good shooter and has good court vision/passes well.

when he plays within himself he's effective. it's just when he tries to do too much like holding onto the ball too long or trying to split double teams that he gets in trouble. i definitely prefer him as a spot up shooter/off guard than at the point. he sure does bait a lot of guys into offensive fouls tho......just like ginobli. what is it w/those euro guys?? lol
