"Dumping" the clutch is what broke this guys tranny. Dumping the clutch in any car with AWD is likely to eventually cause damage as little to no wheel slip is permitted and all that force is put on the gearset. The tranny in the standard WRX (which I believe this was) is MUCH weaker than the 6MT in your new STi, so you don't have to worry quite as much. In each gear change when driving hard allow the clutch to slip just a little bit (especially going from N to 1, and 1to2) and you should be fine with the 6MT.

My bad, I didn't read all of the thread and just figured it was a WRX since he broke it in second. Then yes, I agree with you, with enough abuse anything can break. Like I said, dumping the clutch in ANY awd is a no no.

Word has it that he won't be allowed to get this fixored under warranty. Too many people associated with Subaru around who read what Matt posts.

Just as well, if he enjoys driving hard like that he may as bite the bullet and upgrade to a tougher tranny.
