Tranny problems?

Problem 1
When I am trying to shift into 1st or reverse at a stop, I often can't for the first to tries. It feels like it is sliding into position, but then it is just mushy and isn't really in. Sometimes when I can't get into reverse, I go into 1st and just cycle through 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th at a stop and then try reverse and it works. Sometimes when I cant get into 1st, I put it in reverse then try or put it into neutral and just press the clutch a couple times then it works.

Problem 2
Might be the same thing, but when I am stopped at a red light, my gears often grind when going into 1st. This is happening less and less lately, but it is still a problem. It very very rarely happens when I am slowing down and coming to a stop though.... just when I am completely stopped and not moving.

What do you think the problem is? Is it covered under the 60,000 mile warranty?
Is there anything I should check?

I'm thinking it might be my syncros, but maybe another tranny problem also.

TIA

getting into 1st from a crawl is usually pretty hard... if you must get into first from a roll, try double clutching and rev matching it, or you can just bog it like i do.

reverse is always fidgity

I don't have many problems getting into first from a crawl actually, it's just when I am stopped. I just rev match it and it pops right in.

You have to be moving just a tad in order to go into Reverse. I noticed that the best way to do it (for me, when I'm parked) to put it on 1st gear and move forward a little, then while it's moving, I can shift it to Reverse with no problems... but make sure you're going REALLY slow or else you'll end up grinding your gears. Hope this helps

how many miles do you have? i have about 50,000 and had the same problems. Also, I'd go into 4th gear grinding sometimes.

With the reverse thing you have, that's pretty much normal. you don't need to cycle through all the gears to get into reverse; just hit 1st and then hit reverse.

for 1st gear: if you are grinding from a full stop, it may be your synchros. I took mine to a dealer and they said my 1st and 4th synchro's were shot, and it wasn't from abuse. they covered it. Mods like turboback and uppipe don't affect the warranty so you don't have to waste time putting your car back to stock. You could if you wanted to feel safer though. You have until 60,000 miles to get it fixed before things become worse.

Im just under 60k (around 57k) on an 02 WRX and want to make sure that I get everything possible done before my warranty runs out.

I'm going to try out the reverse thing where you start moving just a tad first and see how it goes.

That happens to me all the time seems like 1st and reverse are always a PITA to get in. For reverse I usually drop it to 4th then reverse and that seems to work. For first I usually have to double clutch at a stop or drop it from third to 1st. The transmisson is my only major complaint with Subaru it can be frustrating when your trying to parallel park and someone is behind you or when the light turns green and you can't get it into gear.
