its not oversize. if you do the math, youll see that 225-50-16 has the same overall diameter as 205-55-16. its because 50% of 225mm is very very close to 55% of 205mm. so now you have a wider tire with the same gearing as oem. plus, they're s-03's so you have some of the best tires money can buy. why would you want to switch?

oh if you do end up getting rid of the s-03's, i'll take them

Actually, it is oversize for the car - just not the wheel. That car is supposed to have the smaller size you mentioned - 205-55/16. I got those 225/50-16 S03's because the wheels are 16x7 and they fit perfectly BUT for some reason S0-3's are "big" for 225s so they rub occasionally. This is why I had the rear fenders rolled... GRR AARG. It seems like it rubs only when you drive hard though... Since I never took it to the track and I never drove the car really hard, I never really had a problem with it and planned on just replacing them when the time came.

Just a side note - those S0-3's are the best street tires I have had. They are awesome.

got about 10K miles left on them and i plan to make good use of them. i am just looking towards a few months later when new tires are needed. the tires are great but with a long commute, i am not certain that i can afford new tires every year.

i am willing to sacrifice performance for higher tread rating.

Tire rack has a killer deal on Goodyear F1 G3 DS's in 225-50-16. it'll cost you $400 for a set delivered to your door; then you get a $40 gift card. Just got mine today after i ordered it yesterday.

I had put 225's on my old RS and they rubbed a little as well. I also put the same wheels and tires on another RS after I'd sold mine and still got some rubbing. I think 215's would be a better fit.

FYI, using wider tires on the same wheel is referred to as a "+0" tire option. If your stock wheels are 6.5" wide, that's generally considered the 'minimum' recommended rim width for the P225/50R16 size (I know, I decided to get wheels that were 1" wider than stock on my '04 WRX for this reason). Generally speaking, most tire pros would recommend using a tire that has it's tread width the same as your rim width. Do not confuse tread width with section width, the '225' in the tire size has little to do with how much rubber meets the road.

If you intend to keep your stock wheels, I would recommend the Goodyear Eagle ResponsEdge tire in the original P205/55R16 size. Check 'em out; they gotz Carbon Fiber in the sidewalls, y0!

If my car still sported the stock rims, this is what I would use. Sadly, they don't make 'em in the P225/50R16 size I need.

Keep in mind this is regarding a 2001 RS with stock 16x7 wheels. 225/50-16 is perfect for the wheel, just not the car (primarily the rear clearance).

As I said... if your stock wheels are 6.5" wide... and if it doesn't fit the car without hacking, why bother? Just get some killer tires in the OE size... painless.

But..... They're not 6.5" wide.

Dude. Seriously. This whole thread is about a 2001 RS with stock 16x7 wheels, S0-3's w/10k miles left and rolled rear fenders.

No worries if you misunderstood. Good advice on the tread width vs section width though - that is commonly misunderstood. You are also right about using stock recommended sizes as it's much easier. It was my bad with these S0-3's as I didn't know they were wider than other 225's.

I said if because I didn't know the width of the stock wheels on an '01 2.5RS. My bad.
