Current law is...

M 23103(a) Reckless driving, no injury; includes off-street parking facility.
M 23103(b) Reckless driving, off-street parking facility.
M/F 23104(a) Reckless driving, causing injury.
M 23109(a) Speed contest, engage in.
M 23109(b) Speed contest, aid or abet.
M 23109(c) Exhibition of speed, engaged aid or abet.
M 23109(d) Speed contest, blocking or obstructing highway.

Now, if they're going to be changing 23109(a) to a felony, just pull away from the light nice and easy, and ignore the asswipes on the highway. And for those interested...

23109. (a) A person shall not engage in a motor vehicle speed contest on a highway. As used in this section, a motor vehicle speed contest includes a motor vehicle race against another vehicle, a clock, or other timing device. For purposes of this section, an event in which the time to cover a prescribed route of more than 20 miles is measured, but where the vehicle does not exceed the speed limits, is not a speed contest.

Unless this is changed as well, road rallies are still legal.

Hey, driving really fast on mountain roads alone isn't racing, is it? After all, doesn't it take two cars to race?

I know when I do it I'm not racing against a clock or another car. So to the letter of law I'm not racing.

Yes, in that case technically you are engaged in a speed contest with your shadow.

Your best bet would be to check with racing clubs and their schedules. Nasaproracing.com is a good place to check, look under regional schedules for HPDE (High Performance Driving Event).

Then I'll remove the clock, not wear a watch, and leave the cell phone and compass at home. Clock? What clock? And the compass, sun dial.
