Hey, just a thought am I the only one that noticed that octane ratings drop from east to west. I grew up in NY and it was easy to get Sunoco 96, now I live in CO and have to hunt down 93, and I hear in Cali anything higher then 91 can only be found at a racetrack. Ok nuff said this is getting longwinded I need to cut down on the caffeine

Actually, the reason we only get 91 is because there are too many vehicles here that run on premium. When they process crude oil, they can't really predict how much 91, and how much 89, and how much 87 they get. It's just however it comes out. And it isn't enough- in order to make enough "premium" to meet demand, they have to cut it a little with the lower octane stuff. Oil companies aren't to blame at all for the octane of the gas we get. They have to play the cards they are dealt.

Anyways, the supposed pinging is happening in places with plenty of 93, so that's not the problem.

I have an 04 RS, but my owner's manual also covers the 2.5 turbos and it says use premium unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 93AKI (anti-knock index) or higher and if not available 91 can be temporarily used. This is how I read this, 93 is the recommended minimum with 91 only being used when it's absolutely neccesary. Now I have a question for you guys, how many of us have experienced knocking on cars turbos or N/A when we've used the mininum octane rating? I know I have. Just because you've met the minimum doesn't mean it won't knock especially on a hot day when humidity is high. If I had an STI and still lived in NY that car would never see octane lower then 96, my RS is rated at 87 or higher. Living in CO I go out of my way to refuel at the only gas station in Colorado Springs with 93. See the stuff they add to gas (eg. oxygenation etc.) leans out the mixture to reduce emissions so you have to compensate with higher octane ratings. Octane slows the rate of burn and at the same time keeps it more consistant and cooler. Low octane fuel usually flash burns too rapidly leaving deposits of unburned fuel (carbon) and often causing that ping when the fuel ingnites prematurely and the crankshaft hasn't made the transition past TDC. It's effects are compounded in high performance vehicles since they demand more out of fuel from the start.

...and as for the oil companies meeting demand I'm cynical so I have a hard time believing that, not to mention the east coast has far more people then the west coast and they do not have any octane problems. My theory, the reason CA has low octane fuel is to lower emissions. Higher octane gas when put in a car that can't use it (worn out, improper tuning) can pollute heavily. I know I'm repeating myself, but there trying to lean it out that's the whole point of emission reducing additives. Our Suby's with there ECU's can advance timing on high octane fuels to burn it up and get that extra power to the wheels. Here's the kicker we all have to pay extra money for higher octanes to compensate for the emissions reducing additives. I say What a Crock! , but if I owned and oil company I'd be laughing all the way to the bank. Now this is my opinion and what I believe to be true if you guys know otherwise let me know cause it isn't absolute. Hold on Conspiracy Theory is on I gotta go Later

No, seriously, there are too many people using high octane here. I'm letting a cat out of the bag by saying that all of our godforsaken SUVS are the only thing between us and 90 octane...

So then, what are all the premium gas sponges? Higher-end BMWs? The new boom of manufacturer-added forced induction systems are newer than the move to 91, so that's not it. Is it that older cars last longer on the west coast (no road salt, warmer weather, etc) so these older, pinging v8s use premium? Any real knowledge on what's eating up all the premium gas?

You can't make a car that has 300hp go down to 275... soa would get so sued for that.
Worst of 2 evils...knock the car down a few pegs and *MAYBE* get a lawsuit if they don't mention it...or definitely pay a whole hell of a lot more $$$ to fix all the @#$%ed up motors under warranty (yeah, right...that wouldn't be covered by warranty since it was YOUR foot pushing the gas pedal that let all that bad gas get in there... )....

Who cares? Like anyone who cares about WHP and timeslips of the STI leaves their cars stock.

You know what would be awesome? If that reflash knocks hp down to 275 but added an ECUtek or Cobb license to it
